Hell had come to Earth 6 months previously, an unknown infection rapidly spreading throughout the cities turning ordinary people into ravaging monsters set on literally eating everyone and everything in their path.
If you were bitten or scratched you were already dead, the infection getting inside of you. Poisoning your mind and body. A lot of people once hearing how the infection spread took the easy way out... And that was only a month after the first case of the plague that killed or transformed over one billion people in that first short month.
It spread so rapidly that containment was not a possibility, not one corner of the planet went untouched by the plague that we still know precious little of. Right now it was a battle for survival, the only surviving humans on the planet were the survivors the ones that had mostly lived isolated or in small towns far from the cities.
There were rumors of people having immunity to the infection, but he didn't believe them. Every single person who had contact with these cursed creatures had within hours became savage creatures bent on destruction.
He stepped forward from behind a twisted lamp-post and winced as a loud crunch echoed around the surrounding block. He looked down and saw a dirty stained bone under his heel. It would not be a particularly good idea to draw attention to himself, he had to get out of this hell-hole as soon as possible. He was cut off from his unit, ever since that horde of savages ambushed his convoy he had been looking for ways out of the derelict city.
The firm heavy weight of the semi in his hands gave him a small sense of comfort, he needed to find his unit and get out of here before he was found. A slight sound and movement glanced to his side. He twisted and turned the barrel of his semi towards another alley. He was being paranoid they were still chasing his convoy.
His leg ached from when he fell out as it bumped over several bodies on the street as they raced to get away from the ravening horde. He knew the rules they had to change their policies, they couldn't spare it going back to rescue people left behind no matter how important they were. He should know he was forced to leave his own commander behind and take up that same role. He was only 28 and a Captain being tasked with a Major's job was difficult to take at first but he adjusted.
Another sound that sounded like scraping caught his attention, he cursed under his breath they had lost interest in the convoy and they were coming back for him. He needed to move now, quickly he made his way down the street using the burned shells of cars dotting the street for cover. He did know he wasn't far from the edge of the red zone, he just needed to find the bridge that would take him to the yellow zone barricade and he'd be safe.
He looked up to read the twisted street sign above him, then a feral scream raged in his ears and he was tackled heavily to the ground as the ravenous beast attacked him. He grunted and shoved at the creature with the barrel and quickly shot it in the head. Then the rattling and hissing of the cursed creatures that everybody had come to call zombies as which they seemed to take after came at him from every side.
He was screwed, he wasn't getting out of this. He still had a grenade left in his pocket. He was certainly going to go down fighting. He roared out and shot another in the head, exploding it like a melon. He kept firing at them until his clip ran dry, he swore then swung it around and smashed the head in of the closest one to him.
