Regulations be damned they could not stay away from each other. They were in the same department on the same team in the Special unit. It was beyond against the rules not that their Sarge Mark Spencer cared. He had known both of them for a very long time and could tell that they were both the best thing for each other.

Mark had worked with him since the academy and had served with Jessie's father in the military before that. He had watched her balance him and him reign Jessie in when she gets too "focused". Mark however was no fool he knew he could not protect them and their relationship forever.

______________

Detective Daniels you have a call on line one.

Winnie was the dispatch and desk officer for The elite negotiations team.

Thanks Winnie... Let me guess mom?

Every Wednesday...

Hey mom... Yes I remember... No mom... I remember... Mom the alarm just sounded I have to go.

She smiled as the Sarge hit the alarm for her aid in her escape from the phone. Hanging up the phone she smiled.

Thanks Sarge..

She made her way to the in house gym in their HQ. She glanced over with a veiled smile from the treadmill. He was technically her partner even though they all worked as a team. However they were more when they could be.

“One, two, three….”, each number ending in a grunt as he sat on the weight bench his elbow pressed heavy into his thigh with a steady grip in the dumb bell, his bicep bulging as his arm raises the weight to his chest and then slowly lowers until his arm was fully extended.

The front of the gray t-shirt covering his torso is dark from sweat, the insignia labeled Metropolitan Police looked as if it had been tattooed onto his pecs. Focusing on his technique he never noticed he was being watched. Until the pat, pat, pat, on the treadmill caused him to raise his eyes, he’d recognize those calf's anywhere, his eyes enjoying they travel up the well toned thighs, rounding the firm ass, till his eyes locked on Jessie’s, a smile came out of nowhere as his watched her dark ponytail bob and weave as she kept her stride…

“Hey Jess, how’s your Mom?”, without even looking at his watch he knew if this is Wednesday it was time for the phone call...

Oh mom is... Quite her usual self thanks. Some sorority sister of hers has moved back home and she surprise surprise has three ever so handsome sons I could choose from two lawyers and cardiologist.

Mike their computer god tactical member spoke up with a laugh.

What happened to the psychiatrist?

The other team sniper Brad chimed in.

Or the senator's son?

Sarge spoke up

Hey guys enough She should clearly go with a lawyer then we probably won't have to lose her when Alexis wins and gets her married off. At least an attorney would understand the value of a cop wife.

Ha ha laugh it up guys mom has never won one of our battle of wills

She glared with a smirk at them.

Just hang it up Jess, rumor has it the Captain considered hiring your Mom as a negotiator, but figured she was over qualified, she’s going to ware you down, just give it up, and remember to invite us to the reception…, Mike piped up and was shortly joined by a chorus* of laughter.

Neil stopped pumping weights and looked up at Jessie his ice blue eyes begging forgiveness. Sure it was all in good clean fun and part of the camaraderie of the team. But he wondered what did Jessie see in him a sniper, a cop with a cop’s salary and a wife, and her mother was trying to set her up with doctors, lawyers, a senator’s son, Indian Chiefs and God knows who else. What the hell did she see in him was thought always hovering in the back of his mind.

Her mother’s family came from money, but his Dad was a poor potato farmer in the Annapolis Valley, and he learned to shoot out of necessity growing having rabbit or deer for Sunday dinner was a big deal, more often than not it was potatoes and buttermilk.

When no one was looking he silently mouthed, “Sorry”, then puckered his lips into kiss, and with a little pecking sound sent it her way, his curling into a smile.

Jessie was far more like her father. He had been a soldier most of his adult life till he met her mother. They were the living epitome of cliche quotes like love makes you do strange things... A career soldier suddenly leaving the Army for a woman. Opposites attract... High society and a average Joe soldier... Jessie had always been more like her dad. She tolerated the wealth and the annoying shallow and boring droves of people it brought with it. When Mark had told her father about a new team he was forming she ran for it. Acing everything the academy and Mark through at her. She was damn good at her job and was not going to give it up.

Funny Mike... You realize she would probably end up tactical therefore in the truck with you...

She nodded with a smile to his silent sorry. Her disdain for her mother's world was why she was so intense in her own. Single-minded to the point reckless at times so determined to help people without ever having to give the code word to a sniper to end someone's life.

Hot call!!! Shots fired Alinton Ave. Gang task force confirms hostages involved! Team one your up!

Winnie's voice broke through it all as the arm roared to life for real.

Mark barked out

Okay two sniper location. Mike you will be feeding info as best you can don't know what camera tech would be there for you to hack into rounding up anyone family needed Greg that's your job. Jessie on Negotiations are I'll handle tactical. Suit up let's go!

As soon as he heard Winnie it was all work and no play.

The dumb bell dropped to the concrete with a clang… Leaping from the bench heading for his locker, reaching in seconds flat, slamming it open and grabbing his tactical gear and webbing. His rifle was in the the team's van so at least he didn’t have to worry about forgetting that.

Lacing his boots he stood and patted himself down making sure he had whatever would be needed and made a dash for the exit double timing it to the van… He leaped into his seat and reached over head unlocking his rifle and carefully taking it out of it cradle, then holding it close to his chest, muzzle up.

“Mark where’s the high ground, I need the best vantage point you can give me”, knocking the clip of rounds against the heel of his boot to ensure they were settled evenly and the spring was free.

Mike nodded pulling up city map of the area.

There are three good vantage points close to the hot spot. Eight story office building across the street three doors down to the left. And two in the high rise apartment building to the right. We have a truck vantage point literally on the cross street to have a clear line of sight on the front door and the negotiations.

She nodded as she leaped into the van with him he others in the other trucks. Mark nodded to Neil their signal for a different channel on the headsets briefly.

They confirmed kids involved Neil. You know what that means... She may go off res on this one... We tread carefully.

Hearing the intell his jaw locked tight in his head only three words echo, Fuck, fuck, fuck… Awww shit kids… Why the fuck did kids have to be there...

“Roger that, Mike”

Jessie was the total professional cool, claim, collected, but he knew certain things pushed her buttons, when kids were involved she could go from pro to def-con four in a flash-point.

With a nod he and Mike switched back to the team channel.

I’ll take the truck if that’s a go, Mike your call.

The eight story building would have made more sense, he would be able to see everything and alert the team to situations as they happen. On the ground his recon of the area was very limited, but maybe, just maybe he could intervene if Jessie decided to go Rambo…

He waited for Mike’s decision, he’d do whatever Mike said, he was a team player to the last. Two tours in Iraq had trained him to obey orders for the good of the team come hell or high water.

Neil you are a better shot take sniper we all have this... It's okay.

Mike had heard what Winnie had told the Sarge. Sarge decided to be completely honest with Jessie.

The target is a kid Jessie... At least one maybe two. Gangland had been on stake out at the pool ball and two kids walked in they didn't think anything of it except maybe two young gang wannabe recruits till they had a brief clear view in the window of one of the kids pulling a gun.

She simply took a deep breath and answered.

Copy that Sarge minors on site.

Her focus following the usual activity as her eyes became intent on the road and her mind clearly working through how best to approach the negotiations.

“Roger that Mike”

Just two finger taps on the driver’s shoulder and the van stops, Neil hops out and swiftly runs to the building already cleared by Metro. He takes the stairs two at a time reaching the eight floor swinging open door he scans the room and sees everything he needs.

He fleetly sets up a snipers nest and settles in, his rifle laying across the overturned desk, his butt sitting on an upside down milk crate.

Putting on a ballcap, the bill forward, and every time he did, the same thought flashes though his mind, it may look cool to put the cap on backwards but that doesn’t keep the sun out of your eyes. He scopes out the area.

Peering through the sleek black tube of the Vortex Viper state of the art optics.

“Mike got two targets, yellow building your left, second story your two O’Clock, over?”

She spoke with the team leader from Gangland task force while the two snipers set up and Mike found cameras to tap into in the poolhall.

Never thought we would be called in to save the lives of gang members.

Sarge nod to Brad's words.

All in the line of duty.

Mike had answered Neil and looked to Jessie.

With their phones in there can you get me a constant live feed?

Sketchy at best one old school payphone down a short hall by the bathrooms main phone behind the bar best bet can't .ake it solid live feed.

Call it time to get this started.

Once someone picked up the phone Jessie began her negotiations.

This is detective Daniels of specialist response team. Is this a hostage that I am speaking with?

And so it began. Within minutes she had the lead kids name while talking with he second hostage taker. She had managed to help him get his friend to agree to get the wounded innocent out. The kid swearing they didn't mean for anyone to get hurt except for their target. Sarge used the shield to walk her and the two paramedics closer to the door. The kids seemed to be responding well to her till they told her how their testimonies had failed to get justice for their family how when they went to the cops they were dismissed and how no one was willing to believe them so this was their only option.

I believe you... I can also hear it in both of your voices you don't want to do this. You were both raised better by the brother these gang members took from you.

Oh boy here we go...

Mike muttered as he quickly confirmed the boys story. As he basically rattled off Jessie's appointed actions.

Ordering Sarge and the shield to stay back... Check
Offering something they don't believe they could have... A cops trust... Check
A show of that trust weapons kicked back towards the Sarge... Check.

Shut up Mike. Snipers do you have the solution IF this gets ugly?

The Sarge growled already knowing the two snipers had their shots he hoped to pi k off both targets if need be. Brad spoke up.

Sarge is that authorization to vo against Negotiator?

Negative she still gives final command.

Sarge sighed as he thought Jessica don't be wrong.

Peering through the scope Neal had his target, “Solution is in sight sir..” , counting his heartbeats noting the rhythm, knowing if need be he’d have to take a shot between heartbeats for the best accuracy.

Neil sat silently saying a prayer that Jessie would be successful at her job so he wouldn’t have to do his. He could see the kids face, his brown eyes, the way his lip quivers before he speaks, he could see everything his target did, everything every little detail. Its hard to kill someone when you’re literally looking them in the eye.

As he dwells on what he my have to do, his mouth went dry, his tongue slithers out and wets his lips as he waits for Jessie’s go, no go command, as he watched a stain spread over pants darkening the kids jeans, it took a moment for Niel to realize what he was seeing. He just watched his target wet himself..

She managed to pull it off. The two targets finally gave up. She finally breathed a sigh of relief as the others helped the hostages out and arrested the two kids. She walked over to gangland task force and growled.

Find out who dismissed these two when they went to the cops after the trial put their badge numbers on the file and hand deliver it to the commissioner is that clear.

Walking back to the tactical truck and sat down.

Neil, watches Jessie work her magic and resolves a very hairy situation she was simply the best at what she did and he was thankful for that. His finger slipping away from the trigger he relaxes his grip on the rifle and sides the cold pitiless steel down beside him and gives the sign of the cross.

Quickly he returns the room to the way he found it and made his way down the stairwell anxious to reunite with the rest of the team and congratulate Jessie on a job well done. As he light-footed it down the stairs he couldn’t remember if Jessie three day rotation was in sync with his own. Julie has to go to a medical conference in Boston for a week, and he was hoping Jessie’s mother didn’t have things lined for her.

If everything went according to plan he and Jessie could spend a few days at his cabin about 100 Kms north of the city and do a little fishing, relaxing, just get away from everything, all the stress and bullshit.

He seen she was alone in the truck as he approached, the rest of the team obviously trying up loose ends.

“How you feeling Jess, you were brilliant as usual..”, deciding to take a minute to feel things out before asking if she could join him this weekend.

I'm fine and thanks. I want to get my hands on whoever just dismissed those two boys when they tried to tell them there was more to the problem.

She shook her head before slamming her fists against the steering wheel.

We just protected the scum that killed their guardian... their eldest brother... And all because some cop with a chip on his shoulder about e en the innocent people that have to call these lower income buildings home.

“I know, I know but you did a lot of good today, things could have turned into a real cluster fuck if you hadn’t defused the situation.. You can’t fix everything, don’t let this eat you alive”, patting her on the back and noticed her muscles were tight as a drum..

Taking a deep breath before continuing, “ You need a little R and R, I have access to a cabin in the woods about 100 clicks north of here its on the edge of a lake and there’s nothing but trees as far as the eye can see. If you have a couple days off why don’t you join me for some alone time, we could do some hiking, fishing, and forget about the world for a couple of days.”

He had barely finished speaking when he seen Mike and the rest of the team approaching at three O’Clock from about four blocks away, probably canvasing the neighborhood for intell.

Yeah...

She nodded at that quietly adding.

She going to be out of town or something?

Mark walked over to them.

You did good Jess... Didn't go too far off res this time... Thank you. Here is your 40cal.

The last part he said with a chuckle before seeing the tense muscles.

Hey could I get you two to pick up the debriefing drinks. You two know everyone's usual just build a pack and take your time.

A knowing nod to Neil none of them like having to protect the actual badguy cause of it all but when kids were involved it hit Jessie the worst. She had to be sniper a few times on calls and it still messed with her when the young man went from helping the negotiator to an active hostile that she had to take out.

Neil could only manage a nod to jess, before Mark closed ranks, ending chance of explanation as to Julie's where abouts. By the look in Jessie’s eyes he knew what she was thinking, and he began thinking if their first phonecall months ago, the conversation was something out of the Twilight Zone but every single word was etched in his memory.

His mind flashed back months ago, it was almost midnight when the phone rang, and Julie answered it, “Neil its some woman and she wants to talk to you”

As he took the phone he was gruff, “This is Neil its late who’s calling?”

The voice on the other end was shaky, “What do you feel like when you have to kill someone?”

He recognized the voice immediately as Jessie and told Julie he’d take the call in the other room. That was the beginning of their relationship and another shot fired over the bow of his already sinking marriage.

“Sure Mike we’ll get the drinks just take us back to the station and I’ll get my bike”

Mark shook his head.

Just take the truck Neil.

With that he walked away and got into the tactical truck.

“Buckle up Jess”, he said with a smile hoping some kind of fancy sancy latte would get her out of her funk.

“Good idea Mike that’s why you’re the boss.”

The truck roared to life as he cranked it up and set foot on the gas and with a wave they were off, it was only a dozen blocks so the trip and the talk would be short…

“Yes, she’s away, she had to go to a dental hygienist convention in Boston”, his voice interrupted by the sequel of breaks as they stopped for a traffic light.

Glancing over at Jess and couldn’t read her expression, “At the very least I’ll have a week of peace and quiet, but it’ll be so much better if you could come to the cabin with me..”

Pulling off from the light the coffee shop was just ahead, “What’a say, I’ve missed you so much...”, reaching over and giving her hand a squeeze. The pupils of his ice blue eyes grew wide as they soak her in.

Sounds good. I have missed you too.

Once inside she nodded to the old man behind the counter.

Lorenzo... Glad to see you back.

He nodded clearly every minute of his 82 years of age but coffee was his life even his family line the way back to Italy.

No silly old man's knee problem stop me. How are my officers? Usuals for everyone.

She nods and smiled to him.

You aren't old old friend. And yeah full round of regulars.

As the cardboard tray was filled with Styrofoam cups Neil stepped forward and slapped a twenty on the counter.

“We have to hurry back Jess you know how they get if they don’t have their brew. Gracias, Nicolo.

The old man wagged his finger, “Neil that’s Spanish, in Italian grazie e arrivederci is how we say thank you and goodbye.”, pressing the change into Neil’s hand.

Neil laid the change on the counter, “You keep it Nick take the wife out to dinner”

“With a buck twenty-five”, the old man still laughing.. As Neil hurried Jessie back to the truck.

She smiled and hurried back to the truck with Neil.

Yeah can't keep them.waiting.

She laughed a little at their banter as she pushed open the door.

After holding the door open for Jessie, Neil jumps into the truck looking back once to ensure his rifle is still in its cradle, looking over at Jess getting situated, “Buckle up buttercup we don’t want to get a ticket.”

As she became situated he took the coffees from her lap and sat them into a well between the front seats, it was designed to hold clip boards, radios and the like, but made a perfect holder for a six pack of coffee. He cranked up the truck and they were on their way, all the lights were green.. Maybe that was a good omen.

Just before pulling into the parking lot he turned to Jessie, looked her dead in the eye, “Is there anything wrong? You’ve been pretty curt with these one and two words answers.”, just as the last word slipped through his lips the breaks groaned and Neil shifted it into park…

As his eyes wondered over her, he was difficult to keep his emotions in check he just wanted to hold her, kiss her, and most of all help himself to her luscious body but work was work and play was play. He couldn’t get over how close they had become in just a few short months. Maybe it was being with her, eight to ten hours a day, maybe it was the fact he could talk to her about what he did… He couldn’t figure it out but he was a better man because it happened he knew that much.

I just hope the commissioner will hand whoever brushed those kids off his or her ass. You know the kid I talked to the most today was 10 his brother heading the show was 12. Because of some heartless egotistical ass we nearly had two take out two preteens Neil.

She shook her head. She needed him to hold her... To kiss him. The cabin could not arrive fast enough.
