The screen lit up warming to life as a welcome message blinked on the screen. Seconds later the message changed morphing from the bright Welcome Letters to the logo of the International Colonial Corporation. A bright fanfare of music swelled up orchestral in nature as pictures of distant planets began to roll across the screen.

“A new world awaits you!” A British female’s voice purred as more exotic planets appeared on the screen “what will you discover?”

The planets faded away the scene morphing to a woman in a sexy yet respectable flight attendants uniform that was a robin egg blue with red accents. The ICC logo rested on her breast glittering with gold as she cleared her throat.

“On behalf of the International Colonial Corporation or ICC as it’s known as we would like to welcome all of you on the incredible journey we are about to take” She said in a posh British accent.

“If you’re seeing this message then that means you have been chosen or you have purchased a spot on the Ark our first and premiere colonization star ship” She stated enthusiastically.

She took a step back giving space for the starship to appear on the screen. It slowly twisted and turned show casing its golden colored chassis and long spindly arms, it glittered with lights and its powerful ion engines flared as the woman waved it away.

“That was the Ark our premier starship and the first of its kind it’s the culmination of years of research and billions of dollars”

“And you’re its first passengers!”

A picture appeared behind the woman replacing the different planets with pictures of muted silver pods. Long shots of expansive decks full of the pods were shown as well as people climbing into them. Everyone looked happy and some even cried in joy as they were brought one by one into the silver pods.

“Our journey will take around a hundred years to complete” The woman explained “But do not worry while the ship travels you and your fellow crew members will rest comfortably in one of our luxurious hibernation pod! Using the latest in cryogenic technology no one shall age a day as we go about our journey!”

“Once our journey is completed the Ark will spend six months in orbit as your team leads establish an outpost and begin colonization procedures during this time the Ark’s entertainment options will be available to you you’ll dine in luxury, learn about your future roles, and unwind with the many entertainment options we have included on the ship”

More pictures appeared all show casing different avenues of entertainment. They ranged from movies and swimming, to high tech gravity chambers and virtual reality machines. There wasn’t a single entertainment option that wasn’t on the ship. After a few minutes, the pictures faded and the woman came back on screen and broke into a big smile.

“More information will be sent to you as we get closer to our voyage!” The woman said her voice dripping with too much excitement “For now enjoy your last few months on Earth and prepare yourself for the great migration in the history of humanity!”

The woman on the screen froze and seconds later the screen exploded in static. An error message appeared flashing red angrily.

The screen went black and the sound of a camera being moved sounded out over the screen. There was another burst of static and suddenly a man appeared filling the screen with his face. His hair was buzzed short almost bald, his skin was a dark tan almost red as if he was beginning to develop a sunburn, his eyes were a brilliant sea green and his chin was covered in rough stubble. He was shirtless revealing a tan muscular chest that was covered in recent scars, he wore a black wetsuit with the top half pushed down around his hips.

“I can’t believe I got it to work” The man said relief filling his voice as he sank into the chair. The room he was in was circular blinking with lights from various electronics and systems. The room seemed to bob rocking from some unknown force outside as the man regarded the camera.

“I have no idea who is seeing this” The man stated as he leaned in and looked directly at the camera “I was able to piggyback the Ark’s communication signal but whether or not I’m breaking through the planet is a whole other thing”

“My name is Lazarus, Lazurus Cobalt though I go by Laz for short. As of now I think I am the last surviving passenger on the Ark 1”

Laz paused sucking in a deep shaky breath. He motioned for the camera to wait and got up pushing the chair back angrily as he turned his head away from the camera. A sob could be heard, an ugly mournful sob that tore out of his lips as his shoulders shook. After a few minutes, he turned seemingly having composed himself enough to continue.

“I haven’t seen any one else so far” He stated sinking back into the chair “Communications went down with the Ark and while I saw plenty of escape pods launched I have yet to have any contact with one”

“That’s the purpose of this message…. Well one of the purposes anyways”

Laz paused again this time his sea green eyes lost in thought. His hands twitched and began to curl and uncurl into a fist. He stayed silent for several minutes his hand still forming and unforming a fist as his eyes went from a deep peaceful green to a troubled angry storm.

“They lied to us”

Laz spoke it without any hesitance or fear. His tone was defiant as full of anger as it was of challenge. His declaration was a dare a dare for anyone to try and claim otherwise. As if the ICC was going to somehow jump out of the shadows and try to dispute his claim.

No one came out

“They will lie about it and give half-truths, they will say otherwise, hell they’ll write us off somehow! But the dead say otherwise and I’ve found records that prove it. I have no idea how long or if this message will ever reach earth but at least the survivors on this planet if there are any beside me will see the truth will hear it”

“We were all conned”

“This planet….. It was not supposed to be our homestead. Oh sure it’s an aquatic paradise like they promised us..... technically but more on that later But someone or something was here before us. The ark reached the planet and half of us were woken up to prepare for planetfall. We were here for one day before the planet reacted. I believe it was automated as I have not seen any evidence of recent life on this planet but it doesn’t change the facts. A single blast tore into the Ark destroying thirty percent of the cryo-pods and sending us spinning down to the planet. The ark was SHOT down and as of now there are five thousand cryo-pods resting on the ocean floor I have no idea if they can survive down there or not nor do I have the ability to get down there”

Laz paused again his emotions taking over. A tear ran down his cheek running a line down the curve of his face before dropping off of his chin. He made no move to rub at the wet trail it left instead starring at the camera as his eyes continued to water and fill with grief. He took another shuddering breath and ran his hands through his short hair before continuing.

“According to the protocols I have been reading there’s about a fifty-fifty chance they are safe. Supposedly the cro-pods can run even without power from the ship though again there was nothing in the protocol about them being below sea level. I haven’t been down there yet to check on them but I am working on it” Laz stated gesturing at some unseen lump to one side of the escape pod.

“My current plan is as follows to try and get down and check on the remaining cryo-pods and search for the escape pods I am going to continuously broadcast this message. If you managed to get out of the escape pod and you can move then I am including my coordinates in this message please make your way here as soon as possible”

He got up reaching out for the camera and taking it in his hand. He held it close to his chest as he moved over to a ladder in the center of the escape pod.

“I’ve got one last surprise for you earthers back home” Laz explained as he began to climb up the metal ladder “I said they were not technically wrong in the sales pitch to call this a beautiful aquatic paradise, right?”

Laz reached the top of the ladder and paused to open the rectangular hatch. He unsealed the door and then reached out and gripped the metal handle. He made sure his grip was good before swinging it down and pushing the hatch up with one animalistic grunt. Bright sunlight poured out of the hatch temporarily blinding the camera leaving only the sound of Laz grunting and climbing through the hatch.

“Tropical paradise my ass” Laz grumbled as the lens compensated for the bright sunlight and darkened revealing the planet to the camera.

It was water

Water as far as the eye could see
