Panties

I've never understood peoples' problem with the word 'panties'. There is a certain style of underwear, defined by its cut and coverage, that are 'panties'. That's what the word is used for. It's a diminutive of 'pants' because female undergarments are diminutive pants in the truest sense of the word, and it's a word that has entered the colloquial lexicon as meaning 'the bottom part of female undergarments'.

I wear panties every day. I will continue to do so until I'm forced to retire them for adult diapers in another forty or fifty years. I don't get the hate. :)

She reached for the flour high in the cupboard. Her t-shirt rose exposing the bottoms of her adorable panties. A treat my eyes refused to ignore.

Nope - going to stick with panties.

I love panties. Even the plainest and most matronly are sexy when they are covering a woman. Just knowing what they are designed to cover, or adorn as the case may be, makes them sexy.

It's just a word, there are other words that people don't like, but that doesn't mean we should change the language.

Panties by any other name would get just as moist.

Ok, ok, someone had to do it.

"Moist" is a bad word now? What is the politically correct substitute, damp? Wet? Sopping?

Read this:

It seems 'panties' are juvenile and non-sexy to many women. Just like 'moist' is on women's top 5 list of most hated words.

I'll keep calling them panties - can't think of a better term.

What do you think?

Well, it is, perhaps, easier over here in the UK.
"Knickers" is a term commonly used.
As one girl is reported to have said, a few years ago, "it's nice to get someone new in your knickers".

"Panties" is a word used by the trade and advertising.

:)

Been all of those; used them in writing - and others.

Dripping.

Not once have I dripped. Oozed and leaked but the fluid always adhered to my body. Of course, it could be my usual horizontal body position. I can see an experiment in the future if hubby is brave enough.

I highly encourage experimentation! A strong proponent of it, enjoyable for all! Let me know the results. Or write about them. ;)

Have him tie you over the back of the sofa. I can almost guarantee drips. ;)

I couldn't read more than ten seconds of the linked article without doing an eyeroll so bad I almost gave myself whiplash. Apparently I've been out of the loop and until now didn't realize that the words 'panty' and 'panties' were on the naughty list. Really? It reduces women's undergarments into something childish and/or infantile, while at the same time sexualizes the garment? Also, apparently the letters "ies" always changes a word into something reserved for children. Does this mean we can no longer call females 'ladies'?

Did anyone read the linked articles as well, or search for hated words on their own? Oddly enough, most that I found (relating to panties) were written by women. Maybe the article's author is on to something here. Maybe the word 'panty' is such a evil and demeaning word, it should be replaced by something that has less of a sexual connotation, since that is apparently the only response so many people have when hearing it. It appears that these people are not only disliking the word in general, but even more disgusted when the word is said by a guy, which makes it creepy enough to turn their stomachs because they are sexualizing little girls. (pause for another neck-twisting whiplash-inducing eyeroll)

Panties? Moist? It seems that many women are trying to remove any word that may have any connotation to anything remotely sexual, regardless of context. Since I'm ignoring the silliness, I guess it fine by me, but I hope their hoop skirts are big enough to hide the lines their pantaloons will make. I won't stop using the words that these oddballs don't like, but I won't stop them from whining.

Other words that made the top of the evil lists:
no
like
impossible
maggots
slacks
pulp
ointment

Seriously? It goes to show that you can't please everyone. No matter what, anything and everything you do or say is going to piss someone off. (oh way, is 'piss off' on the list too?)

Who cares

What ever you call them. no matter what you say it's going to 'offend' someone. People, in the US particular, have gotten way to thin skinned about words. No matter if you write PC or what you feel you're going to piss someone off some how. so just enjoy the freedom of writing what you want. I in particular enjoy putting a few little tweaks in my stories to goose the thin shined, and even once in a while write to show the total ludicrous thinking some of them have.

I'm a proponent of knickers too, being British.

I prefer wet and slick to moist and damp.

Most of this stuff is personal preference anyway.

This all seems like such a silly thing for one to get their panties in a bunch about.

I don't care what you call the damn things but I still hate them...

I stopped wearing traditional knickers as they always ended up bunching up between my butt cheeks. Very uncomfortable arse floss. Found some nice cotton strings which I've worn since. As long as they're the right size (and no one tries to give you a wedgie), they sit very comfortably.

(I've even blogged about my knicker-wearing preferences: http://www.torialyons.co.uk/2014/10/02/knickers-to-a-vpl/  )

I agree.

I see the word as having a specific meaning. If I want to describe any female character as wearing undergarments, frilly panties conjures a much different mental image than cotton underwear does. The word has its place.

I agree, panties is the best of the lot, though I still hate it. I tend to get around it by using "thong" or "bikini panties" or "G-string" when I can get away with it.

Of course, if you really want to offend people, but while using words that are not in the least bit offensive, you have to work "niggardly" into your conversation.
