Palin on SNL: Brilliant? or Recipe for Disaster?

Is Sarah Palin's planned appearance on Saturday Night Live agood idea?

  • Yes, she will be funny and charming

    Votes: 7 50.0%
  • No, this will hurt the McCain campaign

    Votes: 7 50.0%

  • Total voters
    14
They're in the "fall on our swords" phase. It's brilliant for SNL, though.

IMPRESSIVE

I dunno. Call it a hunch. I wont be surprised if Obama fails. He said so himself...we can lose.

I don't know if this will be good for McCains campaign or not. I do know that quite a few Obama supporters are salivating at the thought of scrutinizing whatever she says and does in order to cry foul about it.
I do know that when Tina Fey plays Palin, McCains percentage drops.
I do also know that Palin needs to do this. She has to do this to defend herself. Most people here would not enjoy having someone make fun of her on a regular basis. Most of us here would be angered and throwing slander of that person on a regular basis. However, we seem to forget that, and savor in someone elses pain.

Palin serves a purpose for McCain. She exists to bait Democrats and expose their worst behavior, and she does it well. Democrats hate her.

But Democrats are 40% of the voters.

The other 60% are Republicans and Independents. The Independents are curious about her, and they note how Democrats act.

They may note that, but the power of the press, pundit or talking head, should be noted. Its sad that a pundit, something that is just supposed to be funny, causes voters to change their thoughts of someone. But that has been a problem for over a century. As noted, Garrison Hearst said "You supply the pictures, I'll supply the war."

What slander?

The second SNL bit used Palin's exact responses.

I dunno. To me, this has Epic Fail written all over it.
I vote of Epic Meh.

She can't do any worse quipping fluffy puns with Seth Meyers than she does talknig serious issues with Katie Couric.

And people will be like "Oh ok, she's kinda cute if she wasn't a politician. But now I have to turn off the TV because I LOST MY JOB AND CAN'T PAY THE ELECTRICITY BILL, WHATCHO GONNA DO ABOUT THAT SARAH?! HUH?!"

The way most should react to any of the candidates wasting a second of those last weeks on doing fluff.

Exactly.

It may prove to be the smartest thing they've done yet. Unfortunately. *sigh*

Of course, it totally depends on the script. And if she is willing to do it. I can see her getting there, reading the script, and walking off, refusing to do it. Could happen...

Either way, there will be more drama and distraction.

i think she will appear *with* a script; memorized jokes, etc. proving she has a sense of humor.

How come I can't vote for both? :) I think she WILL be funny and charming. And I think she will hurt the campaign. Ultimately.

JAG

Its always about the perception and the spin.

Story time: A guy goes to the barn to milk his cow. The cow smacks the man several times with her tail. The man get some rope, a crate to stand on, and is standing behind the cow raising her tail out of the way when his wife walks in the barn. She takes one look, says "Disgusting!", and leaves.

I'm convinced the South lost the Civil War because it forfeited Old Glory to the Northern team.

Somewhere else I commented she can do scripts, but not improvise. I hope they get her to improvise. And I agree with Selena that she'll be funny and charming.

Having said that, I get it the Repubs are reaching out to demographics and that her going on gets a lot of attention and thy need it with Obama outspending McCaine, but something just seems wrong about candidates at this level going on comedy shows at this time.

Like when Huckabee (?) did that skit with John Stewart and Colbert where they beat up Conan O'Brien. If it wasn't before it was clear right then he'd never get anywhere in the race. No serious contender does that kind of stuff.

So while it will be fun and all, it seems a bit disparate. Okay, she goes on, does Biden get equal time next Saturday?

JOMAR

Yep. Skits demean the Presidency.

In the early days of the Republic politicians roasted oxen and tapped several kegs of whisky when they wanted to corral the Gomers. Entertainment is okay, too. Let Tina Fey impersonate Palin at Obama rallys! But the candidates need to stop being the show.

Kinda like when Nixon went on Laugh-in? I don't know if it'll save her and her side, but it sure will get the rating up even higher on SNL.

Oh, Please, Jag! Cry me a river. In those first couple of weeks when she was nominated she reveled (and still does revel) in people chanting her name, adoring her, worshiping her, and casting her as the hero come to save the day! Well, that doesn't come free. Obama gets worshiped like that too--he also gets people waving monkeys with his name flashed around, and his cartoon face on fake food stamps surrounded by fried chicken. On and on and on. And while SNL can't always manage to make him as funny as others, Fox news has done their best for far longer than SNL has with Palin in trashing Obama every which way they can--from questioning his religion to his patriotism.

That was NEWS savaging and slandering him...not a comedy show doing satire about him. And Palin HERSELF has as good as called him a terrorist.

So. You're saying she can't take as good as she dishes out? She's a wimp? She's got tender feelings? Hey. This high stakes politics. You can't stand the heat you get out of the fucking kitchen! And Palin's bill for stepping out onto that stage and being adored is especially high because she refuses to take any of the regular punches that all the other candidates must. She refuses to answer any questions she doesn't like, and has rules on what interviewers can ask her. Does Biden have such restrictions? No. Does Obama? No. McCain? No.

And yet this woman wants to be VICE PRESIDENT of the UNITED STATES? This isn't the PTA, nor is it mayor or even governor. This is a position that could land you in control over one of the most powerful nations on Earth. So she damn well better be able to hold her own in the worst shark infested waters ever. If you want to say "poor little girl! Everyone's being so mean to her!" that's fine with me. But I dare you to tell me that you'd be saying the same if this was Hilary and SNL was mocking her...which, as I recall, they did. For months on end. Palin is getting no worse and no better in her mere six weeks in Politics than anyone else has gotten over the last year. YEAR.

If Palin wants this position, this is what comes with the job. Not just for her, for anyone. You roll with the punches, and learn to pick your battles (i.e. that a news show lying about you is more serious than a comedy show making fun of something you said), or you don't take the job.

Oh, please.
I am not looking forward to the pain you and I will savor in ourselves and our families if McCain wins. Tina Fey never makes fun of me because I've never done anything as incredibly breath-takingly horrific as palin is doing right now.
Them's the breaks.

Word. They're fiddling while Rome burns, IMO.
