First, a disclaimer: Never worry about the labels, just concern yourself with getting what you enjoy.

Of course, now to answer your question, you can be a masochist without submitting. Submission involves giving yourself and your will to another. If you are not giving up your will, but are enjoying the heck out of the burning sensations that hum through your body after a sound spanking, but do not permit yourself to become mentally or physically helpless, you may be a "bottom."

Now, BDSM seems to break down the interaction between people into categories and labels, but as you will see, these terms can mean many things to many people.

BD= bondage & disapline
DS= dominance and submission
SM= sadism (sp?) & masochism

i enjoy ALL of it. (Am a little bit of a masochist with some limits, who enjoys submitting as the subject of bondage & disapline while at the mercy of a dominant male with a sadistic streak.) Not everyone will have a tendancy to embrace all of the aspects involved.
