I had heard (NPR) that it was quite crowded this year but was surprised even that it is opened again to the public. I had thought that at solstice and equinox times that they made it off limits due to the crowds...

And a trip to Wales would be nice too, to visit Tintagel castle. I'm big into Arthuriana!

No i don`t live near the stones it was over a 400 mile trek but more than worth it. There were thousands of people there, but all lovely chilled people. I have been to the winter solstice at stone henge and that is always a quiet beautiful ritual. I have to say my favorite place is the stones at Avebury, a truely magical place. :rose:

Paganism is a broad term and many paths and cultures fall under it's heading. Weave here anything you feel is relevant...Viewpoints, debates and dialogue. Rituals, poetry, music, herbcraft, artwork...

I'm assuming by concept you don't mean sect (as in monotheistic religions). Paganism to me is not a religion, it's a philosophy of life...

I'm animistic, believing all objects possess life; Pantheistic, believing that all objects/beings contain a spirit or soul and panentheistic, believing that God (or whatever you name it) resides in all objects/beings...

I realize the turning of seasons and the natural world around me and live consciously within them... I acknowledge that I am part of a universal web of other phenomena and ego-centricity is a long ago farce that never will work.

Darker nights draw near and the days will grow shorter. Winter will come soon, already it is the Autumn Equinox. I'm just sorry we couldn't see the eclipse from here. :rolleyes:

I am researching wicca right now to see if its the path for me, I have not looked at pagonism as you describe it but I will check it out.

Hi Hikari! You've brought up 2 of my favorite subjects!

When you refer to spiritual alchemy... The transmutation of lead to gold was basically a facade that allowed the philosophers to practice the real art. While it was permissable and encouraged to remain in the good graces of the royals and church, the true art lay in the transmutation of one vibration to another, transforming the mind...

These are some excerpts from a paper I wrote several years back...

Practical alchemy in the western world is defined as the art and science of transmuting base metals such as lead and copper into more desirable metals such as silver and gold. The applications are obvious in the mundane world. Through a seemingly complicated and lengthy series of extractions, distillations, condensations and then the manipulation, rearrangement and ultimately, the resurrection of all components involved, the alchemist achieved the desired effect.

In the East, alchemy practices tended to place more value on health and healing. There was more emphasis on medicinal purposes with the goal being to find the “golden elixir of immortality”. (Unfortunately, there would be many deaths to alchemists and emperors alike before the formula was perfected, if ever it was). Still, the end goal in both traditions was always obtaining a physical treasure.

That being said, a more complete statement would be that practical alchemy is only one dimension of this ancient science. Added to the outer goal of physical manifestation or science is also an inner goal. That is the willful evolution of the human soul. In the West it is known as the art of Hermeticism. In the East the study is found mainly in the Daozang or Taoist Canon.

If we are correct in the assumption that the mystical world is immanent in the material world than the threads of inner and outer alchemy are too closely interwoven to separate anyway. The ultimate goal is to temper the physical and practical aspects with the spiritual and philosophical dimensions. The outer dimension with the inner. The chemist is at the same time the magician.
“Mind (as well as metals and elements) may be transmuted, from state to state; degree to degree; condition to condition; pole to pole; vibration to vibration. True Hermetic Transmutation is a Mental Art”. – The Kybalion

THE PHILOSOPHERS STONE
In outer or practical alchemy there was believed to exist a substance that instantly or catalytically brought about the desired results. There were several names this substance was known by, but commonly it was called “The Philosophers Stone”.
As the philosophers stone was to outer alchemy, so was Hermeticism to inner alchemy, dealing with the mastery of mental forces rather than material elements.

The basic tenets of spiritual alchemy are comparable to other esoteric philosophies which are: The entire universe is divine in nature and humans being a part of that universe can affect all other organisms on all spheres of existence by their actions or inactions. All organisms are in a state of constant evolution. Nothing is ever at rest or it ceases to exist and is therefore not a part of the universe. The aiding of nature through alchemy is the work of the spirit to reach its highest point of perfection. Of course, this means the highest point of perfection that our mental state can perceive.


The seven principles upon which the entire Hermetic Philosophy is based are as follows:
I. The Principle of Mentalism – “The All is Mind; The Universe is Mental”
II. The Principle of Correspondence – “As above, so Below; As Below, so Above”
III. The Principle of Vibration – “Nothing rests; everything moves; everything
vibrates”.
IV. The Principle of Polarity – “Everything is dual; everything has poles; everything has it’s pair of opposites; like and unlike are the same; opposites are identical in nature, but different in degree; extremes meet; all truths are but half- truths; all paradoxes may be reconciled
V. The Principle of Rhythm – “Everything flows, out and in; everything has it’s
tides; all things rise and fall; the pendulum swing manifests in everything; the
measure of the swing to the right is the measure of the swing to the left;
rhythm compensates”.
VI. The principle of Cause and Effect – “Every cause has it’s effect; every effect
has it’s cause; everything happens according to law; chance is but a name for law not recognized; there are many planes of causation, but nothing escapes the law”.
VII. The Principle of Gender – “Gender is in everything; everything has it’s
masculine and feminine principles; gender manifests on all planes”.

By understanding these basic principles that govern ourselves and the universe, we learn to recognize the divine spark of vital energy in everyone and everything. Alchemical work takes place on many levels with different facets interpenetrating and overlapping each other. By the proper application of these principles, any common being will be able to effect positive changes in their minds and selves as well as nurturing of their spiritual self. When viewed as a spiritual art it becomes a means for exploring our inner space. By knowing the self, one can know the essence of the universe.
