I recently finished Screw the Roses: Send Me the Thorns. A good book witch was recommended to me by people on this forum (Thanks). In the book they mentioned a couple times that “A paddle whack compresses the skin. With a lot of paddling, the skin will lose its resilience and a lot of nerves will die. This results in a condition we commonly call leatherbutt.” (Miller & Devon 140)

What I’m wondering is if this is really something to be concerned about? Is leatherbut a permanent condition. How much paddling is required to cause problems? Thanks for any info.

i've never heard anything about this..so i'm not of much help, will be interesting to see if anyone has information on this.....

I haven't come across that phenomon in My reading, but will keep it in mind.

Hey at my age if I don't already have a "leatherbutt" I don't expect I'll develop one. Now regarding the risks. There are always risks in all we do. As Ben Franklin once pointed out it is all a matter of "...how much you want to pay for the whistle."

So I say paddle on all you hunkydunky Dom/Dommes!

In my experience I've only run across it personally a couple of times. "Leather butt" or "Leather bottom" is probably more common among gay male bottoms than in female bottoms either het or lesbian. I believe this may be so because from what I've seen, gay leathermen play harder than their het counterparts, and they do less warm-up. Warm up is "Bend over, boy!" and then <WHACK!> with pretty much a full power swat...

Toxn, from what I've seen, to develop "leather butt" you have to play HARD, very hard, over an extended period of time. On the flip side, I know players who have been doing this 20 years and they tell me that their ass is just as soft, supple, and responsive now (if not more so) as it was when they started playing. I know the bottoms are just as responsive as they were when _I_ started playing with them 6, 7, 8 years ago... :D

Doing things like giving an aloe vera or arnica gel rubdown of the butt after playing... good aftercare, massages to keep circulation going, etc, can make a difference too, I'm sure.

Hope that helps alleviate some of your concerns!

I have that book too and while it was a good read, there were quite a few things in it that I have found to be not so factual, at least in my limited experience. I am sure there are so many differences between people they err on the safe side.

I have heard of it before and heard that moisterising can help prevent it, and also changing implements used to allow for some variance. It is said that if it still persists, taking a break for a couple of weeks on that particular area, combined with pampering the skin, can bring you back to former soft smoothness. I personally have noticed way back that if we do beatings on a regular basis and hard, it is not my skin which toughens as much as the muscle and flesh underneath. Everything tightens up and can become almost rock hard while still keeping a soft skin and sure beats working out for months in a gym to get the same result. Unfortunately, I also think my skin is developing a thinness and perhaps dryer state as a result of age which means it feels pain in a different way and much easier, but can also be counteracted with regular moisturising and care.

Leatherbutt is real, but rare. I have paddled hundreds of rears and have only encountered it a few times. Hopefully, I have never been the cause.

I equate it with the kind of stamina Cowboys develop for riding in the saddle over long periods of time. Saddle sores heal and the ass becomes more resilliant. The same is true with heavy spankling scenes.

Personally I prefer bare hand spankings. They are much less likely to do any damage and they give instant feedback to the Top. Additionally they are much more sensual that a paddle or belt. Nothing is better for me than feelnig the heat radiating from a freshly spanked butt. I also get a pretty good tingle in my palm, and that lets me know how much force I have applied. If it hurts my had too much, it's gonna do the same to the bottom's bottom.

After this weekends play my poor behind is still got that leather feel to part of it. Now it has decreased but it has taken a few day of lotion and general care. So this weekend because I'm not up to 100 percent I will not be playing like I would like.

Thanks for posting this. I'd wondered about it myself after reading the same book, and hadn't found much evidence.
