P90x

I just recently got Wii fit and have been woring through some of the exercises of the board. It's alot tougher than I thought. Some of the yoga stretches are a killer.

I think you're doing a great job of advertising for them.

Yeah, I should email Tony to get a cut from the royalties, huh?

I started this thread more for personal affirmation for Secret and I, and because I know there are a lot of people I've met here who are looking for a good workout routine. This one does a good job of both burning fat and building muscle, all the while resulting in better overall health. It's Tae Bo, Chuck Norris, and basic training all rolled into one.

Hey Slyc just looking for an update to see how the program is treating you two? Still going strong with it?

Yep. Still a daily routine. Getting ready for the Arms & Back workout tonight. It's one of my favorites. I usually breeze this one.

Secret's informed me that I'm definitely showing better muscle definition in my arms, chest and back already. And the paunch is starting to flatten out a bit. :D

Having been in damn good shape before, my body remembers what it used to be like. It probably won't take the full 90 days to get to where I want to be, but I'll see it through and keep up with it. I'm also fairly certain I'll never have that 28-inch waist I once enjoyed, but I'll be more than happy with 32 or so.

Good to hear that things are still going well with it and you're seeing some results as well. I can see how just completing the challenge for the full 90 days could be an achievement in itself. Which routines are you finding the most challenging?

Without a doubt, the Yoga X is the toughest. Especially with the swelling in my lower legs caused by the DVTs, I struggle with anything that works my legs. I don't know if I'll ever be able to do an entire Yoga X routine, but between the rest of the workouts, I'll be more than happy with the results.

Well, this is more than a little frustrating . . . .

I've said before that the Yoga X portion of the regimen is the hardest for me. Well, I may have to knock it out of my routine altogether. Between the burning pain of the ulcer on my left foot and the swelling caused by six years of living with DVTs, I'm having a hell of a time getting into the various poses without considerable pain.

Secret's able to do the majority of the routine, but I can't make it past the first thirty or forty minutes. I'm a tad bit miffed at this wrinkle, but I don't want to risk aggravating the ulcer until it's no longer a factor.

I think Yoga will be something I'll have to get into once the ulcer's gone.

That's a bummer. I can sympathize, I'm having to modify a lot of poses in my regular routine until I get back into shape. Though I'm guessing the poses they use in P90X are probably too intense to modify much. It probably won't hurt your results too much to substitute something else you're able to do.

That's what frustrates me the most; I can do the majority of poses in Yoga X. But as the regime continues, the pain escalates. It's the same with Kenpo. After the first half-hour, it feels like my foot's on fire.

Overall, I'll get what I want from P90X: muscle mass and definition, and a stronger core. I may not be able to finish all of the routines (yet), but those I can will yield admirable results.

So we've now begun week four, which is the supposed "Recovery Week." Yeah, right! Recovery? That's what I was looking forward to after the first fifteen minutes of core synergistics. I'm sweating as much with this hour-long routine as I am with Yoga X.

The core workout is designed to strengthen the midsection, which it will most certainly do. But banana boats and Superman curls and lunge/reach/curl/presses are nowhere near a light workout. But it works, no doubt about it. Even if it does put me in excruciating pain.

I decided to bite the bullet and ignore the pain from the ulcer tonight, to just power through the workout and hope I get used to it. I figure, if I increase my pain tolerance, maybe the ulcer won't bother me as much. We'll see. At the moment, it's pretty numb with occasional stabs of white-hot pain. But that'll fade.

I hope. ;)

Figured it was time for an update. ;)

We've started the fifth week, and the routine has been changed up a bit. The first night was Plyometrics, of which i could only do the first fifteen minutes or so. But it was something.

Tonight was Back & Biceps. Lots of curls and pull-ups with a few variations. I went all out on this one, using the black resistance bands (the hardest) for all the exercises. I only faltered on some of the curls, for which I should use the middle bands (green). I'm sure I'll be feeling it tomorrow, but I'm happy with the fact that I powered through all the exercises.

Both Secret and I have noticed definite changes to our physiques now (although not exactly the changes she wanted -- yet).

She surprised me tonight by announcing, according to her new heart monitor, that she burned about 800 calories in an hour and ten minutes. I figured I burned at least as much, since I was pulling against more resistance than she was, so probably about 1,000 calories. Damn. In one hour. :D

glad to see that things are still going well with the program. 1000 calories! That's a hell of a high intensity workout.

No kidding. I'm still shaking. ;)

I've noticed that my shirts have gotten more snug around the shoulders and biceps while hanging more loosely around the middle. I'm sitting at 205 lbs still, and I figure I'll probably gain about five more before the ninety days are up. Especially with the new recovery drink, which has twice as much protein as the original one we were using.

P90x works very well if you can stick with it. Most people stop 4 or 5 weeks in discouraged that they can't keep up. Having a partner, your wife, helps a lot. The big key is knowing your limitations and not killing yourself and losing confidence.

I need this -- and a consistent routine -- and a pusher.

Workouts are always easier with a partner. If you and Bel did it together, you could push each other.

Sounds about right for me as well. Though I need open space too :(

Yeah, some of the workouts do require having at least a hundred square feet of unobstructed space. Our living room is just barely big enough, but Secret and I still bump each other now and then.

Personal Victory

A few weeks ago, I posted that I was going to cut out the legs and back portion of the regimen. Well, screw that. I decided to power through the pain and go for it tonight. And I got through the whole damn routine except for three exercises. So, out of 56 minutes of exercise, I did about 45 or so.

The ulcer hurts like hell, but it's fading now. And with the AbripperX workout that immediately followed, I did every single exercise at least as many times as the athletes in the video.

Damn, but that feels good. In a sore, my-body-aches-like-you-wouldn't-believe kind of way. ;)

I noticed, since the last time I weighed myself (two days ago), I've lost four pounds. I hope that's only fat weight. I don't want to get below 200, and I'm hoping to get back up to around 210-215. I've decided to increase my protein intake via power bars and the recovery drink.

According to the booklet, over the next few weeks Secret and I should be noticing dramatic changes to our overall musculature. We'll see.

Crash

I crashed hard tonight.

Being my only day off from the restaurant, Secret and I took the Little One to SeaWorld (we have season passes). Spent a lot of time in the sun and pools before the park was rained out. I ended up with an interesting tan, since I wore a tank top for most of the day.

Tonight we did Kenpo X. I started off fine, but almost exactly half an hour into the routine, I crashed. Hard. Heavy breathing, excessive sweating, seeing stars, etc. And the ulcer was volcanic. I ditched the rest of the workout and sat in the shower for ten minutes.

This was the first time I ever crashed so hard, and Secret wasn't too far behind. She finished out the routine, but at half speed and with noticeably compromised form. She only burned 680 calories tonight, while I was way below at 410.

I guess these things happen now and then. We're not discouraged, but we are more aware of our limits.

Just one thing more to work on.

hang in there, you two. I have some friends who are doing this program. They run several half-marathons a year and play soccer regularly. This program frequently brings them nearly to the point of puking. It is a tough, tough workout.

Kudos to you for your commitment!

Thanks, Monique. Yeah, if we hadn't both already been in fairly good shape to begin with, it would have been suicide to attempt this program.

It's funny. I never thought I would look forward to exercise, but on some of the routines (the ones which work arms, back, and shoulders especially), I find myself anticipating it excitedly.
