It was near the end of the school year, and this stupid American History class boiled down to one big research project. I rolled my eyes as the teacher droned on and on about it, and then came the unexpected twist: this project would be done with a partner. I looked across the classroom at my buddy Kevin, and he nodded back at me, cementing our partnership in this project, only to have our plans dashed by the next announcement from the professor.
Our partners would, of course, be chosen at random.
The class sat stunned as Professor MacInnis went through the process of randomly determining who would be partnered with whom. Quite literally, names drawn from a hat. A stupid old stovepipe hat, Abe Lincoln style. Seriously, the guy was incorrigible.
My buddy Kevin's name came up quick, partnered with that dumb jock Adam Yates. I instantly felt bad for my friend; he'd wind up doing most of the work if he wanted a decent grade. Kids started moving around as partners were called off, and I waited impatiently for my name to be called, as possible partners were slimmed down.
Until there were just a few left... Still my name wasn't called. I looked over at the girl sitting next to me: one of the most popular girls in school, the valedictorian, prom queen, drop-dead-gorgeous...
We were the only ones left.
The professor called her name.
And then mine.
Did I mention I'm nobody? Tommy O'Ryan. I'd be a nerd if I got better grades, and I'd be a jock if I gave a shit about that scene... But as it was, I was nobody. Which suited me fine. I didn't want any spotlight. Hell, even the bullies left me alone. I just wanted to get through my high school time and do the nerdy stuff I enjoyed with the few friends I had.
I looked over at her, and gulped nervously. She was out of my league in more ways than one, and I knew it.
And she knew it too.
Tommy
