How many people here use prostitution as a common theme in their stories? I just wrote a story with a young man below the poverty line who becomes a rent boy to help his family pay the bills, and I've had a few prostitutes before... How many of you have a story with the world's oldest profession in it?

Funny you mentioned that.

I just started a strokodrama with that very theme (well its more of a street punk gay boi thing) the other day that will be a 7 or 8 to 10 chapter mini-series.

Some REAL interesting plot twists will be in it though! :D

As you'd probably guess, I've never done that, but then I just don't write stories that require prostitutes. Also I don't find it sexy or erotic, nor do I tend to write stories of... hmm, that darker side of things? But good luck to those who do.

I do. :) Prostitution is smack dab at the intersection between sex, social economics and personal choice. Lots of room to explore characters and the worlds in which they live. :rose:

I haven't. It's just not something that I think about when writing, yet. I might someday though.

Well, shit, A month ago, I would have said no-- but in fact, Despina was a prostitute, and her hospitality house offers sex as part of the hospitality.

Of course, it's a sci-fi universe, so my characters are not saddled with the concerns of real life prostitutes. It's all a feel-good fantasy.

Hm, I'm going for dark n' gritty on this installment.

But if you talk to any of my readers, they'll just tell you that I go for dark n' gritty for everything I write :D

I have quite a few stories and even a book or two where the protagonist is a male prostitute. It saves a whole lot of the time and character angst in getting into the action. (Although I also have some stories and books that deal with the angst of becoming a male prostitute.) I have a multivolume detective series where the detective is unabashedly promiscuous--again to save a lot of foreplay yammering.

detective series... that's the series with Clint, isn't it?

Yep, the Clint Folsom series--only about two-thirds of that series is posted to Lit. When I moved it all into a two-volume anthology, I added at the beginning and end (I've saved the middle years for possible new works).

*Laugh* I loved that series. The fact he was 'unabashedly promiscuous' made it such a good read, lol. :)

I used prostitution in my series, but didn't glorify it or make it seem sexy. I showed the darker side of it as the character had resorted to it because of drugs. I also had her looking pretty skanky at that point like a real drug using hooker would appear.

Thanks. That's what made it fun to write too. I write mysteries in the mainstream. It was fun to let the protagonist of these let loose.

Is that a hint of what's to come??? Do tell! ;)

Don't put ideas in my head! You're dangerous. :D But the story to which I was referring is already available here. The prostitution is hardly glamorized, though. My character does it out of necessity.

See, that I could probably do. In a universe where prostitution was legal and accepted -- sort of like Joss Whedon's Firefly series -- I could probably do it. But knowing that a lot of, or most, people who are in sex industry are not in it for fun makes it a less-than-appealing thing for me. Also, there just isn't room in my stories (yet) for such a thing.

*laugh* So you *don't* want me to drag you into something else? Hehe, look how well the last thing I dragged you into paid off. *wink*

Actually, doubley paid off. And I like the new look on the blog. :)

Thanks!

What have you been up to lately? Don't tell me you've pulled out of writing for good?

Oh no. :) I have a book coming out Friday, and nearly done with its the sequel. :) Still waiting to hear on my Priceless series, plus an anthology story for another publisher. I had another anthology accepted not long ago, too.

Nothing posted with prostitutes, but yes, I've written something using them.

I've have two: one M/M/F with a male prostitute; the couple pays for him. In another story I have a gay male prostitute who was on the street in the past but escaped it. I don't know if he quite counts as he's a side character and this is just his background, not something he does in the story.

Now the question is (and this relates to a sci-fi story) do "sex slaves" count? How about those trained as sex "artists" who have full time jobs providing pleasure in a company?

I've written a few stories set in the time I was in the Air Force and stationed in Japan. It was pretty much a way of life and almost the only sexual outlet for single men or married men there without their wives. Although illegal, it was widely accepted and the girls operated openly.

Outside Gate #2 at Kadena, perhaps?
