Lots of activity going on in Savageville this morning. The water company seems to be doing something with the storm water management back in the woods. DC has a Combined Sewer Overflow system and was mandated to stop the sewage discharge into the Potomac and Anacostia rivers during storm events. They are building a big-assed tunnel to store water before it's discharged and maybe all this activity is part of that project.

There are logging machines and bulldozers and dump trucks. It's all very manly.

Most of the snow is gone, but it's bitterly cold out. We've only had a few storms that dropped an inch or two of snow each, but it's been so cold that the ground is still semi-covered.

Sitting here, drinking my morning three cups of coffee, I'm thinking about books.

About 15 years ago a buddy of mine wrote one of those "Dummies Guide" books. It was a simple book that any one of my group of friends could have written. He was paid $40,000 to do it though. It still annoys me.

Then about two months ago another buddy of mine had a novel published. He'd been working on the book for years and years so any money he makes from it is well-earned. He's sold the first run of 50,000 copies and is dickering with the publisher for a second run.

I've always wanted to write a book, but I'm basically a lazy bastard. I do have a lot of great stories mulling around in my dome though. Perhaps I can hire someone to talk to and as I spin a yarn, someone can write it down.

I have a very short first page. Obama must have picked his nose or something.

What I'm thinking about now is snow shoveling.

'Round here there is a law or ordinance or some such that says you have to shovel the sidewalk within 48 hours of the end of the snow fall. Every time a storm is brewing, the tv and social media is flooded with the reminder.

Savageville has no sidewalks, otherwise I'd like to not shovel my walk (which is no big stretch for me as I haven't shoved anything in years (snow, I figure, will go away if you ignore it)) to challenge the man. How can the government make me shovel the sidewalk? That's city property, not Savage property.

Lacking a sidewalk, I don't really have a dog in the fight. It's just one of the things in life that annoys me.

It also annoys me that on Sundays the church(s) down the street hire people to stand in the middle of the street to block traffic so the bible thumpers can get out of the parking lot(s).

Every Sunday for a few months last year, I'd email the Sheriff, the Police Chief, the County Council, the County Road Administrator... asking how they could just block the street like that.

I never did receive any satisfaction on that issue, but I resigned myself to being annoyed about it.

You would really be annoyed around here when the natives block the highway and the police support them

now get out and shovel the snow you big baby

Why do they block the road?

What annoys me is that I have to stop, so someone else can go. What's the legal authority for blocking traffic on a state road so that people can exit a private establishment? If they have some permit or something, fine... otherwise they are just dicks standing in the middle of the road and I shouldn't have to stop.

We have 3 churches down the street, they hire police to direct traffic. This is to prevent the bible thumpers from the 3 denominations from causing accidents with each other.

As well, we have 24 hours from a snowfall to clear the sidewalks. I was outside yesterday 4x trying to clear my sidewalk. It totally sucked donkey balls as I have a corner lot so I have 2x more to shovel!

If it's civilian people directing, don't stop. They can't tell you what to do. It's just some asshole with a whistle.

If God wanted them to get out of the parking lot, He'd stop traffic for them.

Exactly. I would drive by over and over, not stopping, while blaring devil music from my car. Or Nickelback. Something frightening.
