How do we become so attached to them?
I lost Max today.
A 10 year old brussel griffon, my lovey guy with his tail always wagging whenever you looked at him. He was a sort of seeing eye dog for my shi tzu who is 18 and blind... he took good care of her.
This is the second pet in less then a year that I have lost and i swear i never felt heartbreak like this.
I keep waiting for him to walk in here, tail wagging and crawl under the desk to sit on my feet. :(

I am sorry. It is a special bond that only those with pets can understand.

How do we become so attached to them? It just shows that you are a loving and caring person and Max knew that.

*HUGS*

I'm so sorry. You've been going through quite a few things and this sort of loss is so hard.

*HUGS*

I'm so sorry to hear this KC.... I had to put my 12 year old cat down a few years ago, and it was like losing my child.

*Hugs* :rose:

lost my second family dog two years ago. You know they have left a lasting mark on your soul when you find yourself looking where they would normally be to demand attention and they aren't there.

KC I am so sorry, what a thing to have happen.

How is your other dog taking it?

You know we would all hug you if we could

I have to say that as Max lie on the floor dead my other dog made me laugh. She is old and feisty and loves for food and all the junk the kids feed her. She did walk right up to where he was, and i think she knew. Then she walked over to his dinner dish and ate it all.
She is a little antsy this morning, they were inseparable and i worry she wont do well without him.
The baby cat that had become good friends with him was sitting next to him when i found him and my old lady cat was laying in the spot he died in last night. I think they know and also think they mourn a bit.
My biggest regret on having older pets are the kids. Knowing you have to break their hearts with news like that is a horrible feeling.
My 9 yr old showed how much he is growing. I wrapped the dog in a blanket and a friend was going to take me to the vet with his body for cremation. My son asked if he could see the dog. I told him i didn't know if he wanted to, that the dog was dead and he really wasn't inside his body anymore. My son said "I know mommy but i would like to say goodbye to my friend anyway".

Anyway thank you all for the kindness, it is appreciated. :rose:

Sorry for your loss. This story kinda choked me up. I cry when I lose one of my little friends.

Very, very sorry. May the memories you made together remind you why the pain is worth it.

Yes, it is difficult. I am sorry for the pain that you and your children are feeling.

I have a suggestion based on something my sister did with her kids.

Tell the children that you want to create a book or album celebrating Max's life in your family. While you are collecting photos, ask the kids to contribute by writing memories on notecards. Ask them to write about a favorite memory of Max, why they think Max was a good friend, the silliest thing he ever did, etc. - you get the idea.

Writing down their thoughts and feelings seemed to help my sister's children in coping with grief.

:rose: Words are so inadequate at these times...your pets and children have been blessed to have such a loving heart to care for and nurture them.

First, I am so terribly sorry for your loss. My heart goes out to you. I dread the day that comes when I lose one of my "children" (cats - they really are similar to children)

Some friends who never had pets growing up have admitted to difficulties associated with loss. We have had discussions about dealing with the loss of a pet eariler in life and the small way it might aid in dealing with human loss later in life.

It must be terribly difficult for everyone - you, your children, and your other pets.

we are doing this..******* though at rainbow bridge . org. we set up one for sophia but the kids want Maxs to be different. They want to pick the pictures and write things about him for all of us to remember. :)
The ability of my children to always find that silver lining is what i love most about them i think. :rose:

KC, I am so sorry. As you know our Maine Coon died suddenly back in January. I just had another kitty die a couple of weeks ago on July 13th. She was very old and had been sick for a long time, so we knew it was coming but it's still been hard - extremely so on my wife, who had her since she was a kitten...16 years. Toadie had been there for my wife through a lot of life changes, and she misses her very much. We just got the ashes back a couple of days ago, so that ripped the wound open again for both of us.

All of this is to say: I know exactly what you're going through.
