Oscar Nominations

Somehow the oscar nominations strike me as utterly irrelevant and pointless - they generally miss anything not made in hollywood and view the world in a distinctly anglo-centric fashion...oh, I forgot - they're only there so we can look at the stars and spend more money on movies. Who cares about deeper meaning and reason anyway? ;)

I suggest we stop going to watch hollywood movies and all switch to bollywood! Yeah, untranslatable hip-gyrating musical fairytale renditions of the mahabharata! Woo-hoo! :D

With NO sex on screen and kissing only as part of a deep meaningful relationship conveniently positioned so the censor can cut the scene out without ruining the movie.

Cut to scene of waves breaking on beach or clouds scudding across sky then chorus of dancers singing about lurve.

What about cutting to the train in the tunnel - this was in one of the Bond films - I think it was "From Russia with Love."
I wonder how far back the image might be traced in films. Hitchcock used it for the end of "North by Northwest" as Cary Grant is about to join Eva Marie Saint in a train bed loft.

p.s. Lime, go ahead and do a poll for the major categories. I don't think much of the oscars in any meaningful way, nor any such festival awards, but they're fun to guess on.

I just have to say....

GO KIWIS!

11 or 12 nominations for Lord of the Rings (I lost count) and as if that's not enough...

13 year old Keisha Castle-Hughes nominated for Best Actress in Whale Rider!

Man we are good!

Lime

In TZ they eventually started just cutting to commercials when the heroes kissed ;)

The really weird thing is that India has brought us not only prudish films where people can't even kiss onscreen, but also the Kama Sutra...

Stand for your filth, damned it!

Yes...but the US brought us Woodstock and the Bushes...guess the world's a funny place...

...btw - although LotR is nice and all, it just doesn't strike me as a "classic" movie in the vein of La Dolce Vita or Casablanca...am I just being an ass?

Woodstock, Bush I & II, Woody Harrelson...

Well, then again, you WERE founded by our leftovers...;) :p J/K

Summ, I agree. We don't even have to go as far as 'classic'. I enjoyed the 3 films on an entertainment level, but the content ('message(s)' or what-have-you) was as simplistic as Star Wars or other action films. The most profound character was Gollum, but one must credit Tolkien for him, not the film. The movie was not innovative in any way that I could see but for special effects. None of the acting stood out but for the cgi+actor Gollum.

Normally I would agree wholeheartedly with you, but this year the lust of my life (Johnny Depp. Yes, I'm ashamed, but I just can't help it  ) got a nod so they are the most wonderful awards on earth and they mean everything. Well, they do until that night when he doesn't win and then I'll be a bitter old hag.

D'ya know what?

I couldn't give a fuck about the oscars, or any other celebrity awards.

They earn enough as it is, without getting together to pay homage and suck up to each other.

Such collective and self back-patting makes me fucking puke.

Sure, the films are good or not, depending if you're into that particular thing or not.

Am I jealous, yeh, probably!

Fucking luvvy twats.

They're worse than the gang on the uk personals thread!

*puke*

Edit #2

lewd&rude: earlier I simply wrote that I didn't give a fuck what you think. Now I will explain why, so as not to be rude for rudeness' sake (which is how I judge you).

What caused me to resubmit this post was another AH author writing to tell me that he was sorry I had deleted my original post as he was fed up with you too. Maybe it's only us two, but I find the combination of stupidity, rudeness and puerility disturbing enough to speak my mind.

You are NOT witty, humorously mature, or thoughtful. You are not even fundamentally lewd, that takes a mature person (and I do appreciate and enjoy lewdness).

BTW, this post is not an engagement in dialogue.

And there was me thinking you had me on ignore!!!!

Lady, and I say this respectfully, but who the hell are you, or anyone else for that matter, to judge me??

You don't know who I am, where I've been or what I've seen.

I don't expect you to give a damn, and I don't care whether you do or not, it's your decision/choice, and you're entitled to it, but I'm just as entitled to my opinion as you or anyone else is, and I'll post it here or anywhere else as I see fit. Just like you!

If you don't like my opinion, then just like on the TV, change the channel or turn it off!

Why not switch ignore back on? Then you can sit up there on your high perch, lording it over the rest of us underlings with your high & mighty holier than thou attitude, pretending that we who do not amuse you do not exist, while your little band of playmates suck up to you!

Almost EVERYTHING I do here and elsewhere is meant in fun! I may forget to put :D 's amongst what I say, but that's generally and genuinely how it's meant. It amuses some people, others it doesn't, but I long ago, stopped trying to please everybody, because it's not possible. And anyway, those who don't want to be amused, won't be!

This thread is one exception however. As much as I enjoy a good film on subjects that interest me, a lot of the so called stars are stuck so far up theirs, and each others asses, they've forgotten what real daylight looks like!

Yet they still come out a dozen times a year to pat each other on the back and tell each other how wonderful they are.

How many award ceremonies do we need? Oscars, Golden globes, hey he/she's a great person awards and others!!!!

It's all bollocks. The box office tells them all they need to know, without all this hooo-haahh and sing-song!

Hey, and who actually nominates and votes for all these awards? Is it the people "for whom" these films etc are made???

No chance. It's more of them, deciding, in their mighti-fucking-highest-ness that they know what we all liked!!!!

But hey, that's just my lowly worthless opinion.

But, I'm entitled to it!

Now, you all, have a good day!

:)

Best picture nominations for a fantasy fiction film, an historic fictional film, a comedy drama, and an history film about a horse. Gang, if I got a vote I would cast it for Mystic River if only for the fact that it was such a good version of such a great novel. LoTR was great, and it will probably win in order to award the achievement of making all three films and doing so in such grand style.

Frankly, I like to keep things simple. And sometimes the best of the bunch isn't the most expensive or expansive production of a classic trilogy of books. The art of Mystic River reflects the real emotions that people go through under such trying circumstances, and the cast involved in this film was outstanding. It is one thing to create a fantasy story of bravery and treachery that most people will enjoy, but I think it is much more difficult to deal with murder and betrayal in a true life setting and affect the audience in a powerful way.

Besides, Mystic River showed what a great director Clint Eastwood is; he got an ensemble cast of stars to work together based partly on professionalism and partly on the fact that he overshadows all of them.
