So some government agencies have declared that the Covid-19 virus could have come from the Wuhan labs, "with low confidence" which in bureaucrat speak means somewhere between .000001% and "if you squint real hard, stand on your left foot, stick your tongue out and cough, it might be true". And yet those who SWEAR it came from the labs glommed onto it like it was gospel.

Buy wait! The gospel has been usurped by a little used thing called "research".

An international team of virus experts said Thursday that they had found genetic data from a market in Wuhan, China, linking the coronavirus with raccoon dogs for sale there, adding evidence to the case that the worst pandemic in a century could have been ignited by an infected animal that was being dealt through the illegal wildlife trade.

Hmmmm...now what? Claim this is a hoax? It's false information to cover up the real leak from the labs? Claim that it's a slap at the donald? Come on guys! Ya'll gotta' have some far-fetched and wild way to discredit this! I'm counting on you!

An interesting twist. I'll look forward to seeing this data peer reviewed and hopefully corroborated, but even then, it wouldn't fully verify that it was natural transmission in the wild.

covid affects some animals, so it's quite possible it started in bats before moving to other animals and then into the human population

Sure, blame animals, when it’s humans encroaching on their habitats that caused it.

Raccoon dogs, etc, are the intermediary hosts from bats to humans.

Everyone should know that ^ this far into the debate.

That is true, but how many times do you have 100% verification for anything? That rarely, rarely happens. Most times were are operating on the preponderance of the evidence. The point here is that even though this evidence is weak, and hasn't yet established a firm link between the animals at the wet market and the Covid outbreak, it is 100% more evidence for that scenario than has been found for any link to the labs.

Yah, information will trickle out for a long time. And then HBO will release a mini series on it

After SARS and MERS, smart people said fuck...we should go looking where these viruses seem to originate. So they collected samples from bat caves. Now this paper talks about samples collected from anal swabs directly from bats after COVID hit...but we also had samples from caves in China collected over 20 years ago...just not genotyped because money ran out. We diverted some money to genotype some of those samples after covid...and they too found similar results as this paper. I looked for the original article...it is out there somewhere...but it didn’t immediately pop up on the search. I will look later...but I have already posted the link to that paper at least a dozen times already...it falls of deaf ears.

Coronaviruses are very common in bats. And for some reason...that species is capable of having mutations that cross to new species...including the ringed raccoon....and humans.

In fairness, the MAGATs are under the impression that being able to say 'Person, Woman, Man, Camera TV' (bonus points for putting them in the right order) makes someone a President-level genius.
