If your mother/father/brother/sister/niece/nephew needed a kidney transplant, and you were a match, you'd do it in a heartbeat, right?

No question.

But here's something to ponder.

Would you donate an organ to a complete stranger, if it would help boost a loved one up the waiting list?

That is the idea behind a program called Hope Through Sharing, currently being implemented at The New England Medical Center.

I push for organ donation all the time. Working in the health field I deal with this issue a lot, and it's always a tricky issue, and many people are still reluctant to donate (obviously or we wouldn't have the shortage we do of organs) There are many who do not want to even discuss it. To each his own.

As mom who would do anything for her kids, this seems like a no brainer to me. The world of organ donation has it's dark secrets too, and I am sure there are things that go on that are not so ethical. But who thinks of ethics when it's your kid who is waiting for an organ to save their life?

I know there are those who won't move up this list simply because they have no one to donate for them (family) or because there may not be anyone who could donate for whatever reason. It's sad. But selfishly, my kids or family would have to come first.

I don't feel like reading an article, but I'll put my fifty cents in anyway.

I have signed away any parts of my body that are needed in the event of my death. Neither I nor my family have any use for them then. I sincerely hope that this will help at least one person.

Now, donating an organ while I'm living to a stranger? That's a trickier subject. I'm using all my stuff right now.

It's pretty impossible to answer such questions unless you're actually in that situation and able to see the real consequences and feel the real emotions. I know that's hedging. Sorry. I don't know if I'm that heroic.

What would you do, Nitelight?

I don't think I could give to any one in my family either.....
I don't know.....
