Buyback programs are a joke. There aren't buyback programs for can openers or toothbrushes. They are offensive in that they make guns out to be bad things. Plus they are stupid.

If the NRA stops advocating for gun rights, then a new organization will form that will. Gun rights are not about the NRA, they are about freedom and the Constitution.

The politicians of the time added the Second Amendment because they wanted the U.S. to have a small standing army, and a large militia ready to be mobilized quickly in an emergency, bringing their own muskets from home, to serve the state, not to fight it -- remember how George Washington responded to the Whiskey Rebellion.

Eventually, it developed that that is not a good model for national defense, and that a large standing army is not the threat-to-liberty it appeared to be in the 18th Century. Now we have a large standing army, backed up by quasi-professional National Guards who do not supply their own weapons, and it all works very well regardless of whether anybody has firearms at home or not, and the Second Amendment is just an anachronism, nothing more.

Pure bullshit. Look, they have no Second Amendment or anything analogous, and they have considerable gun control, in the UK and in Canada; but neither has "a government who governs without so much as a by your leave," nor does either have "mob rule."

Murder rates have been on the rise, while gun ownership has increased.

That may not be a direct correlation, but it is certainly not true that more guns = more murder.

This is as if Libertarians arguing for drug-decriminalization were suddenly to start proclaiming that cocaine and heroin are good for you, and the more of those substances we have on the market the better. It would shatter the credibility even of their more-credible arguments.

I think the destruction of gun buybacks by police forces should be legal. However, in this case, it is not. If that's a problem, then the law can be changed. Trying to make villains of the NRA here doesn't change what is legal and what isn't.

I'm not a member of the NRA, because of their racist history and attempts to pass gun legislation to prevent non-white people from owning firearms. I think the group has changed and moved away from that, but that is the modern start of the NRA to me, and as such, I can't support them financially.

However, I also think that with budget crisis that departments are facing, I'd rather see them make extra money by selling firearms to citizens who are legally able to own them, rather than confiscate people's houses over minor drug offenses.
