This is my one and only non-How To post in the forum...
I don't remember which posters have been recommending the Opera browser in here, but I owe you big time! I wish I had taken your advice a lot sooner...I shudder to think how much time and trouble I've wasted on IE and Netscape. No muss, no fuss, and it's super fast. Liberation feels SO good!

Thank you, thank you, thank you! :rose:

Send me a PM to discuss suitable compensatory arrangements..... (JK!! LOL!!)

I initially got it because I was on a very slow dialup, but liked all the features that it is my primary browser. I have noticed though, that some places like ebay and sears.com won't let you participate at times, so don't hide IE in some obscure folder just yet.

And like you say, it is about the fastest browser around.

Based on this thread I decided to give Opera a try.

So far, so good. It's faster than IE for sure and seems to hang up much less frequently when I submit posts here in Lit.

It's fast and ok if you like ads, which I don't care for and I refuse to pay $40 to get rid of the ads.

Get Firefox instead and then you'll have the fastest browser out there WITHOUT ads flashing in you face.

IMHO, of course ;)

I chose the text ads, and it's just a tiny bar at the top. It doesn't bother me at all, but I might pay the $40 just to support the independent thinkers of this world. Anyway, thanks again!

go with Mozilla Firebird. Pop up blocker and it works great.

I've been using Opera for quite some time now -- I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who hates IE. Among other things -- go to the File > Quick Preferences menu and select "Open Requested Popups Only."

No more pop-up ads.

I also keep cookies turned off unless I'm posting on Lit, and the only complaint I have is because I've got the non-Java enabled version, and so a few sites have issues on things (Lit, Google, and Yahoo are not two of them, and that's 95% of my websurfing usage). But all in all -- multitabs are my friend, and zero popups are great to have.

A reliable browser is so important. I like Mozilla ... but ya gotta keep the IE, there are some sites (mostly Microsoft sites, like MSN) where downloads won't work with anything other than IE.

Yes, Mozilla has bugs. But here are links for hte fixes...

Mozilla updated to correct Windows protocol bug

Three new branches have been created for Firefox, Thunderbird, and the original Mozilla suite, in order to fix an external windows protocol handler bug. The new version numbers are Firefox 0.9.2, Thunderbird 0.9.2, and Mozilla 1.7.1.

Alternatively, you can set the pref network.protocol-handler.external.shell in about:config to false to remove the exploit, or install the XPI listed below. (This will only set it on your current profile, if you have more than one profile, or could be creating more, you should use the XPI or the updated build.)

It should be noted that this patch was released within hours of the flaw being discovered. Future versions of Mozilla Firefox will include automatic update notifications, which will make it even easier for users to be alerted to security fixes.

Update: It should also be noted that this flaw effects all browsers for the Windows operating system which take advantage of the "shell" function, not just Mozilla.
