Open Polling

Should open polling be used for the year-end awards?

I understand both sides of this. But with open voting Laurel or Manu could see if there are folks double or triple voting and could bring that to a halt. I saw a lot of folks voting with 1 or 2 posts... sure, some of them ARE legitimate but I'd be willing to bet not ALL of them are! And it would be nice to see honest results.

PS Either I'm doing something wrong or you can't see who voted after you vote... only before. That's whacked!

Whooops! I found it... my bad!

Having the open poll would certainly be interesting to watch, but I don't think Laurel will do it. It would piss off more people than the oposite.

On the other hand, I think it's a great option to have, for example, on contests like we're having at the poetry board, where no one knows who are the authors of the poems being polled, and therefore there's no possibility of hurting feelings - only honesty.

I have no problem with an open polling system for the year end contest, although I think if I remember correctly with last year's one you could only vote once per category anyway. If you clicked on a particular category to check what the tallies were like for the category, it would automatically have a flash up that said you had already voted in that category. So Laurel had a system in place which eliminated the possibility of duplicate voting which was great.

Still, having said that I have no problem with having my votes seen. My feeling is that I have made some nominations and if they get through I'm definitely voting for them and it's based purely on what I believe is merit, rather than how I feel about the individual as a person.

I also noted this year that some people nominated themselves, and I would expect that they would cast their vote for their own work in the contest. Nothing wrong with that if they think their work is the best out of the nominations. I do agree though with the post that said that all writers who are nominated should feel honoured, whether it be in the special nominations or in the story categories which come from the monthly contest scores. The fact is that your work has been recognized and to make it to the final four for a particular category given the thousands of stories submitted to the site each year IS an achievement whether you win or not.

Yes, that has always been the system. The thing is that you can create as many different usernames as you want and vote with each of them. ;)

This has always happened too, particularly in the Most Original Sex Scene category. What happens (and this used to be explicit in the rules, I don't remember if I saw it this year) is that self-nominations don't count except to break ties.

I proposed one of my scenes for consideration, for example, and three other people seconded it. Laurel will only count 3 nominations, and not mine (unless in case of a tie with someone else with 3 nominations).

You know, making such assumptions is incredibly disrespectful to the readers. There is absolutely no reason whatsoever that anyone who nominates has to spend time on the forum. I can imagine there were quite a few people who decided not to make a nomination because of all those accusations flying around. It's not fair to readers to tell them that unless they participate all the time, their participation isn't valid.

Maybe you should go back and reread... I acknowledged the legitimacy of most low posters. But the Multiple Nic Folks are a reality here.
