Strong alcohol (vodka, rum, whiskey, etc). Take a mouthful and hold it in your mouth for as long as you can - obviously on the side of your mouth where the problem tooth is. It will sting and burn a bit at first, but it soon goes numb. Once you've held it there as long as poss, spit or swallow. ;)

It really does help, and the after-affects last for quite some time afterwards.

Another thing you could do (which tastes awful) is place a paracetamol tablet on the offending tooth, and hold it there until it dissolves. That one is quite nasty, though.

I hope it feels better soon!

Oh thanks babe! I really was beginning to consider the old string around the tooth and door knob job!!

I will give both of those a try!

Oil of cloves is what the dentists used to use. I've seen it for sale, but rarely.

Ouch! Yeah, try those before you go that drastic.

Pleasure, hon.

This sometimes works, sometimes doesn't, but it's worth a try....

Get a teabag good and soaked, and put it on the tooth, biting down on it to hold it in place. I think it's the tanin in tea - does something to soothe the nerve.

OOOh thats a new one on me!

You know the tooth that is causing the pain my dentist wants to crown (its a lower molar - oh the sceince bit!) and its going to cost me £220 ($300 approx?) - I say PULL IT OUT!!!

Just biting down on the clove works too.. I've done it, works alright, beyond the initial pain of the biting down on something solid part.. :) (on the sore tooth, even biting softly hurts)

Im gonna try that!

Also Lou your trick with the alcohol is working - except I'm not spitting it out - I'm swallowing!!

I had BASTARD wisdom teeth for years. My dentist kept telling me: Oh, they'll come through on their own ok eventually. Bollocks did they!?

I went through agony every time they flared up (that's how come I know the alcohol and paracetamol things work).

I know wisdoms are a slightly different kettle of fish from regular molars, but some dentists seem against just pulling the buggers out. Could it be financially driven? Hmmm...

Anyway, I finally got referred to the hospital, because they were so bad by then, and the maxillofacial surgeon couldn't believe my dentist had left the referral so long.

I finally had them pulled out, under general anaesthetic, and during the procedure they chipped one of my incisors. Back to the friggin dentist for more treatment.

I hate dentists!

Putting an aspirin on the tooth and letting it dissolve sometimes helps but we are going to have you overmedicated if we aren't careful.

I say keep swallowing, Goldie.

LOL Hi Ed!!

Yeah I have been trying a few of the recommendations - the alcohol one suits me best - and I do like swallowing so much!!

Shit I have a big bit of clove stuck in my tooth now!!! More alcohol is needed I think!!
