Oooh...The L Word

Why do so many lesbian women like Shane so much anyway?
She is nothing more than a female version of the bad-boy misogynist man who treats women like shit and sleeps around on their backs with no remorse? I guess most women are alike in many ways, that¡¦s something the straight women have in common with many of the queer ones (who like Shane). Shane¡¦s gender maybe different from the bad-boy heartbreaker asshole type but they are the same PERSON inside.

When I went to my very first dyke bar, I was approached and hounded by someone like this. Made me go "Maybe I don't like women..." Then I realized, no I just don't like pressure frome assholes. She may have had a cunt, but she was definately an asshole.

I guess I can understand liking her if it¡¦s because you understand and can relate to her plight. Personally, I always chalked up her popularity to all the women thinking they and only they can tame the wild girl and CHANGE her, blah, blah, blah just like they TRY to do with the male players out there who laugh at them behind their back (and they do, I have known a few).

agggghh...I can see where you're coming from with that and I've seen so many relationships grow out of it and then crash as well. I really hate to seeing a soul w/ a broken heart for any reason at all. :rose:

ewww OUCH! Sorry to hear that was your first experience at a dyke bar! I hope you had better experiences after that. My first experience...I was just standing around alone. :( hehe, I'm alright now though! :rose:

Personally I've never been a fan of the show, but I do understand Shane's character. I have a couple of friends like her. One in paticular whom I never would have thought to settle down and have a "relationship" did. Granted it broke up only a few years into it, but suprisingly not because of my friends behavior.
She was crushed.

Shane seems actually a lot more fragile than she's willing to admit. She puts up this "tough-girl" act only out of fear of being found to actually have a heart.

Remember, Shane's character grew up on the streets. She had a rough upbringing. She learned to hide her emotions just to survive. Then, the moment she lets her guard down for just a split second, it's trampled on just as she knew it would be.

Shane's character is probably the most believable of them all. The rest are simply vapid...IMHO.

Having seen the first episode now I need to give some comments...

It was much more fun, much more about sex (first episode had 3 sex scenes if I remember right) and such. I definately liked it much more than average tv-series so I think I'll be watching it from now on.

Soon after watching it thought about the comments that it doesnt present real lesbian persons. It really doesnt have much of those stereotypical ones which you would notice right away. Actually by looks you couldnt tell if they are lesbians or not. Is it a bad thing then? Hard to say. I have no idea how big % of lesbians fall into any noticeable categories...

In a way its like any relatioship-drama -series... beautiful and rich, bit shallow people in their relationships. I started thinking that does a normal tv-series present well the hetero-population either? Dont think so. :)

Soo... after first episode... liked it :)

About who's attractive and who's not... I just liked Alice :)

After seeing this thread title, I hit my local video store and rented all of the first season. I don't have Showtime, so I'll have to wait another year before seeing the second season, but I enjoyed the first season.

While I think this show buys into certain stereotypes, so does every other TV show. I think some of the stereotypes shown are accurate and therefore, people can relate to them. I agree that there isn't a butch character, and although there are many butch lesbians, not all are. Shane is the closest to a butch lesbian, but I wouldn't be surprised and would expect to see a butch character in the (near) future.

Was I the only one bothered by Jenny's hair? I love long hair, but was not fond of the whole innocent long hair and bangs look on her. Marina is stunning.

I got it! The L word is "linoleum." Do they have a lot of sex on the floors of kitchens or bathrooms?

Reminds me, I'd like to rent that series or Oz, y'know for the hot same-sex sex mostly but I don't think my roommates would be too crazy about the selections.

I'm not sure if that's a Buffy reference or not, but either way I like it!

The only Buffy I know of is Buffy The Vampire Slayer, the movie. The movies wa silly and funny, but the series was stupid and dark (dark is great with me without the stupid).

I also liked the original Buffy's outfit better. The cheerleader uniform with the shiny blue tights and white socks? DAYUM! And also, Kristy Swanson is totally smokin'.

These outfits are nice too.

I couldn't find the one with the tights that have the multicolored shorts looking part and the hot pink legs, where she's wearing a letter jacket too. That was also nice.

My girlfriend and I watched the whole first season and loved it. We are impatiently waiting for February 20th to get here so we can start watching season #2.
As for the reality of it or how much it depicts a true lesbian lifestyle I'm not much concerned with. Few shows truly depict anything other than a small microcosim of society as it is. I will continue to watch and enjoy this show, because .... well.... the women are hot! and to be honest I enjoyed watching a show about women loving women without all the hype about acceptance that usually accompanies most shows about lesbians or gays. It's women loving women and living their lives....and this to me is a good thing.

Ummm, I do have one question though that the show has left me with. Bush confidence....where the hell did they get that from?? I have never, ever heard of this before....

I still say it's "linoleum." And I still think Kristy Swanson is hot, especially in spandex. And really, who doesn't think so?

Did you ever see the movie "Party Monster"? The gal who plays Jenny, also played a roll in that movie too. She was the club owner's wife. She played a mean BITCH!

Anywho...

Still sticking to my personal dislike of the show. Not because it doesn't show "butches" or "femmes" per se, but that the actors are just so....ACTORS! They aren't real. They're plastic and fake.
Most of the lesbians I know have a little more "padding" (which is a good thing). Sure, some of us are slender and try to stay healthy, but many of us are working slobs. We aren't all white collar art dealers or tennis phenoms.
Nope, we're 24/7 average everyday people. Some work in retail, some in corporate america, some are the crazy artsy types and some are just "Moms" , but we come from all walks of life.
The "L" word, shows an elite view point which I personally find offencive.

I'm a bisexual male and don't watch much TV....my watching is limited to Sunday night weekly series on Showtime and HBO.....really!!:) Anyway, one of those shows last year was the L-Word, which most definitely does NOT stand for Linoleum!!

Obviously, I don't qualify as a TV expert, but it is my experience that TV, in general, doesn't really come very close to portraying Americans accurately, do they? Certainly, characters on TV are generally portrayed as thinner, more muscular, more beautiful, and much richer than the average.

So, the L-Word is really no different, and I would definitely agree with JustineCredible's view.

But.......

Keeping in mind that I'm a bit more open than average as far as my sexuality is concerned (I think, actually, more than a bit!!), and that I feel that we all should be able to love who we want the way we want without shame, I loved the show!!

Why? For one thing, I think that romantic love between women is beautiful. I related to the characters, no matter how shallow they may have seemed to some. More important, though, it puts Lesbian love out there...Gets it in people's faces......so that after repeated exposure, its not so foreign to them anymore....gives them an opportunity to get used to it......to perceive it as more "normal".

I think that's a good start, and a good thing.

I hope that I didn't offend anyone and thanks for listening!!:)

*****

I did see "Party Monster". Mia Kirshner has been in a few films and while I like her character in "The L Word", I'm not sure I'm fond of her as an actress. Only time will tell. :)
