Ok, I know it's just a tv show (it came out on DVD this month), but I just watched the first four episodes, and I'm sooooo impressed! Great story line, stunning women, humor, raw emotion, and hot, hot, hot (did I mention HOT?) ff sex...what more could you want? :p

P.S. Even hubby enjoyed it. :)

I absolutely ate up the "L Word" last season. Yes, it was very hot, and I loved watching the women make out. There is something so beautiful about girls kissing... More than that, though, I've become attached to the characters and am looking forward to what happens with them next season. I couldn't say how well it approximates the lesbian/bi scene, but it is such a good show, either way....:)

I've never heard of this show. Please tell me more, sounds wonderful!

Here's a synopsis from Showtime's website ( http://www.sho.com/site/lword/home.do ) although I don't think it does it justice! Digital cable and Showtime are outrageously expensive here, but I'm renting the first season from Hollywood Video.

The SHOWTIME Original Series, THE L WORD, is about a group of young women in Los Angeles, their lives, careers, and romantic relationships - both gay and straight.

Jenny Schecter (MIA KIRSHNER) is a gifted young writer of fiction who has just graduated from college and arrives in Los Angeles to begin her "adult life" with her boyfriend - soon to be fiancé - Tim Haspel (ERIC MABIUS). Tim and Jenny reside in West Hollywood, next door to Bette Porter (JENNIFER BEALS) and her partner Tina Kennard (LAUREL HOLLOMAN). Bette and Tina have been a couple for seven years and are trying to find the perfect sperm donor to help them start a family as they struggle with their relationship. Bette's and Tina's close network of friends includes Shane McCutcheon (KATHERINE MOENNIG), who is the resident heartthrob; Dana Fairbanks (ERIN DANIELS), a professional tennis player not yet out of the closet; bisexual journalist Alice Pieszecki (LEISHA HAILEY); and Bette's half-sister Kit Porter (PAM GRIER), who is a musician and a recovering alcoholic. In the two-hour pilot, Jenny's plans for her future are shaken when Marina (KARINA LOMBARD), a beautiful and compelling woman who owns a West Hollywood café, makes a pass at her at a party hosted by Bette and Tina. Amid denial and confusion, Jenny starts to question her sexual orientation and her love for Tim. Her attraction to Marina is powerful and ultimately irresistible. Meanwhile, Bette and Tina, stunned at how difficult it is to find a suitable sperm donor, attempt to seduce a handsome, young artist on the night that Tina is about to ovulate. The seduction attempt fails, but the encounter does serve to rekindle, at least momentarily, Bette's and Tina's passion for each other.

SweetErika - great call.

A fantastic series with some great characters. The sperm donor story was so well done.
I think Jenny is lovely.

Unforunately the UK series 1 ends on Wednesday.

Boo hoo :(

Has the second series started in the US yet?

Yes, the show is great, and if you read another thread you'll see that the "Shane" character has a fan here.

I too am curious as to whether the show does portray lesbian life realistically. Are there any lesbians out there willing to comment?

Ok, now I'm watching episodes 5-8. My only issue is that this is really, really making me miss being with a woman! :(

I put the DVD in with the intention of watching Episode 5. I wasn't really tired after that, so I watched 6. Then I just had to watch 7, but I was firm on going to bed afterwards. At 3:30 a.m., I finished 8. LOL I'm addicted!

Well done SweetErika.
You get some sleep and get ready for episode 9! Some good stuff.

Only 6 more to go!
I have found this extensive L Word site
It seems to be throwing up some errors in IE but it seems to be working correctly.

I'm looking forward but not looking forward to the last episode on Wednesday. I don't want it to end..
:(

Of interest, Leisha Hailey has come out as being gay.....
She's been out for a LONG time, actually. She was dating k.d. lang at least in 2000 and possibly earlier. (She's the one who inspired k.d.'s album "Invincible Summer.")

Eh, personally I don't like the show all that much, and this is part of why. It doesn't show any women that are like the lesbians I know. All the starring actresses are beautiful and thin, and none of them are butch. I gave up watching it a few months after it debuted...although if my father-in-law started taping it for me again, I'd probably watch it again.

Etoile: Interesting about Leisha Hailey....also, thanks for your perspective on the show....Kalalau:kiss:

LOVE the L WORD!

I absolutely LOVE this show!

I love Shane! ;)

I got the whole season On Demand. I am not fond of Jennifer Beals... Flashdance was as far as it went with me for her. She's the one I could do without! Dana is hilarious and Jenny...aw, poor girl! lol

I can't wait for the next season!

I'm thinking the L word is Love, not Lesbian, but maybe that's just me.

Enh, my mind works in mysterious ways sometimes...well okay, all the time. It just shows occasionally, LOL.

Early promos for the series (the working title, btw, was Earthlings) said "L is for... Love... Laughter... Life" and things like that. They danced around the word lesbian but never actually said it. In fact I think they had a contest that was along these same lines..."what does L mean to you" or something.

Earthlings? That's odd. Suddenly I started thinking of nympho lesbian alien invaders. We cum for your vibrators! We mean you no harm!"

I swear I'm not drunk.

I suffered through the first season and if it were up to me I wouldn't watch the second season, but it's not up to me. My wife loves it.
Personally I really can't see why.
As Etoile had mentioned, they don't seem like any lesbians I know, let alone myself. I simply can't relate to them at all.
They're all thin, beautiful and rich. Jenny is a spoiled, confused bi-flip-flopper. Actually all the characters are weak. It's poorly written, all except for that whole episode around the tennis player who wasn't out to her mom. That was funny becuase in a way it reminded me of what I thought would happen when I came out to my mom. Luckily my mom took it suprisingly well. Hell, she took it better than I did...she KNEW before I did!
But I'm straying from the topic.
"The L Word" bores me. I really couldn't care less about these women and their unbelievable lack of depth.

I guess it's just not as easy for that many straight women to pretend to be lesbians. At least not as well as straight men pretending to be gay. I'm still sad that QAF will be airing it's last season.

Oh well. It might get better. Since I don't have a choice I'll have to watch and see.

I caught Pam Grier in a 70s-era movie called Black Mama White Mama. I'd first seen her as Kit on The L Word so that was a biiiiig difference for me!

I was a regular watcher for the first season. My gals and I would even meet at a local gay bar for martinis or beer and make an event out of watching. But somewhere along, I lost interest. The writing was cheesy, and the characters didn't develop much.

Queer as Folk is WAY better!

I understand what you're saying, but I suppose there were quite a few little pieces that struck me. Ok, I didn't agree with what Jenny did, but I identified with that first attraction and realization. I've been through being torn between the man I love and have committed to and an attraction to women that can't be ignored. Of course I've been labeled a "bi flip-flopper" as well. At times, I saw my own passion and excitement being reflected on the screen. I never looked at the show as an accurate representation of lesbians and life, but I think the emotional aspects were well portrayed. Plus, I like looking at beautiful women! :p
