OOC...General Role Play Discussion.

I'm starting this forum as a venue to discuss general issues of RP guidelines, questions and etiquette.

Many of our new members are also new to roleplay and even amongst the veterans issues arise that might need 'airing out' here.

I am going to provide a link to the wonderful guidelines that Hecate our esteemed former moderator drew up long ago and which can be found, but are often forgotten, stuck to the very top page of the SRP board.

Follow these Ladies and Gentleman and you can't go wrong.

Closed Threads

Well, let me be the first to air a pet peeve: Closed threads that don't announce that they're closed.

This is not on a par with world hunger, but it is aggravating to be looking for a game to join and find one that looks like it's just beginning, open it and find out that it's a closed thread. Worse yet is to read through the entire set-up, only to find that little note at the bottom: "This is a closed thread for Mr Fabulous and wants_to_pee, but feel free to read along and enjoy!"

I have nothing at all against closed threads. I love closed threads.
But is it that difficult to add "(Closed)" to the thread title?

Thanks & Congrats, by the way

Thank you for opening this thread, Ariosto. It's sorely needed.

Let's hope that this will remain a place for discussing RPG issues only and not become another watering cooler.

I agree

I know that when I first started here it was easy to find a thread to join in. Now I wait for days to join a new one. I too am guilty of starting closed threads but I know that personally I try and set it straight at the begining. I also don't think it is that fair to the newbies who want to write but can't find a place to write in this forum.

thats my vent.

add me to the list.

My personal pet peeve is that srp's are beginning to become more form letter style. I give a lot of people credit for taking the initiative to write and most of the stuff that is turned out is of excellent quality. I also admit it is difficult to form a good plot around the subject people most want to write about...sex of course, but it is really irritating to find what could be a really great thread with a little work, open it up and find there is no story, just sex.......reminds me of porn movies these days.

A "watering cooler"? That's what you get when you start writing "watering hole" but that sounds too zoological, so you go to change it to "water cooler" but then you remember what someone said about no one meeting around water coolers anymore since they meet around the coffee machine, and you wonder who said that and forget what you're doing.
It's kind of like a coffee hole.

Let's try and keep this thread floating on page one for awhile. At least until we know if there is a use for it.
Thanks.

I'm sure there is a use out there somewhere. It's just out in space...or mongolia.....or.....Oh I don't know

The story I've just begun with papillion is, what I think at least, a reasonable way to handle it.... (closed for now).

That lets us establish the plotline and then, when it's time, invite others to join in if they wish to do so.. old or new to the board. I think that Lovleynice and Annabelllee are to very fine writers, and at least to me, they're brand new here and I'm enjoying the hell out of writing with them both.

SRPG Exchange

You know what would be good? Am exchange where potential players could come and look for games that haven't begun yet, and potential game starters could find players.

The way sign-up is now is first-come, first-serve, which is great for those people who are on the board all the time, but lousy for everyone else. Time and again you see the same people snapping up the available roles.

Of course, this would require a permanent anchored thread her. Just an idea.

Rueful smile:

Since my back injury, I'm one of those who's here alot and does PM to join those who post a good idea.

How about a board where those wanting a particular genre of story of story can post a request for participants and perhaps an off shoot for ideas looking for participants.
One board could do just use the subject line for "Look for players" or "An idea looking for players".

Newcomers are often reluctant to start when they first arrive but have great ideas. That gives them a forum to post ideas and maybe get some assistance with one.

Just expressing an opinion

I agree with most of what has been said so far
A) a LOT of closed threads-not that I mind...it seems to help develop a good story line rather that an out-and-out sexfest
B) a lot of newbies find it difficult to just "jump in"

But I have to say that the idea for a permanent "casting call/idea/interest thread sounds reasonable...but is it actually doable? It would mean having a lot of scrambled ideas and several people posting to several different ideas all at the same time...

My personal peeve (and yes, I know it's a bit petty) is the writing itself. The grammar, if you will. I'm not perfect and don't expect that of anyone else, by any means. However, it seems like many people give no thought at all to what they write, it's just slapped out at a moment's notice....

Later,

:rose:

If you will look back, perhaps on page 111 or so you will find my attempt to start a general casting call and roles wanted forum. It didn't work then which is not to say it cant be tried again.

I can relate to what some of the people here are saying about closed threads - it can be quite difficult to find a "speculative" thread to join if you find yourself looking for another avenue.

For various reasons (it's a natural break, after all) some of the threads I was involved in terminated at the Xmas break, and it has been much harder finding new ones than I expected.

That said a closed thread is probably the best way to achieve a certain effect that you were aiming for. It's tough, isn't it?

In re writing, grammar and spelling:

Personally I find it tough to read what some post. Akin to riding along an interstate at 70 as I read. When I hit a collection of letters that I have to decipher or grammar error(s) I have to unravel, it's like hitting a World Class pothole and takes the enjoyment out it for me.
I've PM'ed several and suggested, as diplomatically as I can, suggest writing to a word processing program like MS Word or Corel WordPerfect then just copy and paste to Lit. It's helped those who took the suggestion.
Perhaps if we all undertook something similar it would help. Just a thought.
