Back in 1958 Bill Heinz got 2 notes from readers who liked his new book, THE PROFESSIONAL. A novel about a boxer. One note came from Ernest Hemingway, and the other from Elmore Leonard. All the rest were EAT SHIT IT SUX by anonymous.

Crap! Too bad Hemingway and Leonard are both dead or you could look forward to matching that feat.

Haven't started Hate Crimes yet. Need to rest up after Hazardous Waste.

I'm about to modify it all again. My guy is a washed up boxer of 35 years. Joe Louis and all of them were hasbeens before 40.

Some sports have been tagged as "thinking sports" where maturity counts. Auto and motorcycle racing on a road course or drag strip are like that. Age isn't necessarily a detriment. Thinking can keep you out of jams that only a kid with giant balls can get themselves out of.

Not sure where boxing would fit into that, but it's more cerebral than most would think. Brute force only goes so far if you start out stupid or brain damaged.

I used to pore over boxing columns in the 50s and 60s, and listen to matches on the radio. We rarely had a TV in those days (our family moved more than migrant workers) so the only boxer I really saw much of on TV was Ali. Never followed it after the 60s.

Should be a good character for you.

I don't know that boxing is all that cerebral. After 35 the younger contender usually beats you. Your body cant recover quickly, like at 27. And the youngsters can take the punishment. Muhammad Ali was all over the ring and it pissed away enormous energy.

He was fun to watch, though.
