Only military folks can relate to this, methinks

I am tired. I just spent 3 and a half friggin' hours at the commissary. And I didn't even step foot inside the store!

You military folks can probably relate. You know what the commissary is like on paydays, holidays, SuperBowl, etc. Does your commissary have case-lot sales? Ever been to one?

We are having a big case-lot sale this weekend. I got there just after 9:00; the sale started at 9:00. There were 2 huge tents set up out in the parking lot. I was in line for one hour before I was able to get into the first tent. I just got home about 15 minutes ago. 3.5 hours.

Hubby works close to the commissary; I called him from the cell phone to come on his lunch break. While he stayed with the carts and shopped, I walked across the parking lot to the BX and had a slice of pizza, then got one to take back to him. The line hadn't moved a whole heck of a lot by the time I got back.

3.5 hours. And people complain when they have to stand in line at Wal-Mart for 20 minutes. Sheesh. Yeah, I know. I complain, too.

I'm now trying to decide if what I saved was worth it. I'm just thankful the weather is nice today. I think I'll go take a nap.

I don't know it yet...but I will very very soon.

Sounds like fun tho  :(

Why? Are you going into the military???

Fun. Yeah. Well, at least I now have a case of ketchup, and at .30 a bottle, I can keep my kids in hot dogs and french fries for a while. My family are all ketchup-aholics. I'm the only one of us that rarely uses it on anything.

LOL. Ketchup is good on like some seafood and hotdogs, mmmm.

And read my profile. ;)

You have to be at a base that has a lot of us retired people near it.

Here in KS, it is not much of a problem. Small base and small numbers of retirees.

When I was at Davis-Monthan it would take 4-6 hours to go to the commissary on paydays.

I always tried to go between paydays.

Cool! Well, let me be the first (I guess your recruiter probably beat me to it!) to welcome you to the military life. Hope you enjoy it. What career field are you going into?

I use ketchup very sparingly. Usually on corn dogs, along with mustard. But sparingly. lol

ah....is that the key to having case-lot sales? Lots of retired folks? We have LOTS of retirees in San Antonio.

where I was stationed if you were active duty in uniform and went on your lunch hour they gave you head of line priveleges (sp?). check if your base has this and next time have hubby shop for you on his lunch hour.

Won't work for case-lot sales. Would be nice, though.

Yes, the retiree population helps drive the size of the commissary. The bigger the commissary, the better the deals.

We never had case-lot sales at our previous base (but that was 10 years ago; don't know if they had them here then, either), so it was something new to me when we moved here.

The military population, both active duty and retired, in San Antonio is huge. There are currently 3 Air Force bases and one Army post (of course, you probably know that). And two major military medical centers (Brooke Army and Wilford Hall Air Force), which help keep the retiree population going strong here.

I can imagine how frustrating that was. Luckily, I am single. When I was on active duty, I had no reason to be near the commissary during one of these sales so I avoided the entire headache. However, I still bank through my military credit union and driving up to the bank when my payday falls on military payday is a nightmare. Not to mention I have to get up early to do it. Oh well. Thank your husband for his continued service to our great nation, and thank you for supporting him.

Well, thank you! I'll tell him. Thank YOU for being appreciative of the military members!

I can understand your dilemma. Don't you have direct deposit? If you don't, it might be worth getting if you can.

Yes, I know about San Antonio, they would never send me there. They did not have a billet for me there. The one that did come up was for a Colonel and I was a Captain.

So they sent me to the Virgin Islands instead. Punish me please.

Let's see....*weighing on hands* Virgin Islands....San Antonio. Hmmm....gee, which would I choose! lol

I will be going in construction. General Construction Equipment Operator. (Better than being a grunt, lol)
And thank you. :)

Ketchup or Tarter Sauce for me please. :D

Oohh...you get to build things! Cool!

You're welcome.

Ketchup or Tarter Sauce on what? Now, for shrimp and fish, I eat tartar sauce and coctail sauce. Ketchup if for corn dogs, along with mustard.

Romial,

That means that you either rebuild after a friend blows them up or you build things so that he can practice blowing them up. lol.

He is in demolitions and we kid him all the time.

Actually good luck to you on going in.

Daisy, they are right about population deciding which bases have case lot sales.

Hmm....guess I'm spoiled to living here, then. I just assumed that most all the bases had them these days. Well, if you ever get a chance to be at one, take advantage of it!

Daisy I feel your pain

I'm AF and we have similar problems here, specially if pay day is Friday night (friday AM for those stateside) Makes life a pain trying to get through the lines at the commissary, BX, or one american thearter on base.

LOL. Well, it wasn't as if I were doing "regular" shopping. I mean, a case-lot sale is something "extra". I look forward to them so I can stock up on things, but darn if it isn't time-consuming.
