Al's new book is not a post-apocalypse tale. I think this "big change" is that science has caught up and the Gods are dead. We really are a spec in space protected by Jupiter who's massive gravity has been sucking in meteors headed for Earth for a very long time. And Earth has had a few polar flips, so when the caps melt there will undoubtedly be survivors.
