Gas Masks and Purim Masks and Sleeping Children
from Harvey Tannenbaum in Israel

The 2 days of Purim have just ended as we recited Maariv welcoming the next 29 days until Seder night. Well, Seder is defined as 'order' and Purim had its days of masks for the children. Tonight as we watched the kids in their nightly bathtub routine, the face painting and colors began to run with the warm water. "Abba, it's fun to wear masks!" The 6year old had a fabulous Purim in his cowboy uniform.

The counting down after bath time seemed longer tonight until the children would recite their "Shma Yisrael" and "Hamalach Hagoel" prayers. It was well after 9 PM and the 6 and 7 1/2 year old siblings were very active and still hiding candies from each other from the various mishloach manot packages of two days. We were trying to keep the dental bills down and maintain a pre Passover chametz window of opportunity for the next 29 days.

Finally, they were able to close their eyes and begin tonight's dreams in downtown Efrat.

The computer screen flashed the information from the Home Command Center to us on line to open the gas mask boxes, adjust them onto our heads, and not touch the needle with the anti gas nerve potion.

The boxes were already lined up for weeks from their 2003 tradein dates from their 2000 dates of issuance.

Thirty minutes later, our TV, radio, and online screens began to flash that we are required to shlep the gas masks with us starting tomorrow morning.

I had carried a lulav, etrog, talis, and holiday machzor on Sukkot to synagogue. I had shlepped shmura matza, kittel, matza cover, pillow, and hagaddah to the Seder table, and now I had to balance talis, tefilin, gas mask, siddur, and daf yomi book to minyan at synagogue tomorrow morning.

Now it is past 9 30PM at night here and the TV, radio, and online screen are telling us to pack the gas masks with our childrens' lunch boxes tomorrow.

The 6 and 7.5 year olds' school bags weigh 10-20lbs of school book and now they are to carry their lunch, their drinks, their school bags, and their gas masks tomorrow morning.

The Home Command center is now telling us to try the gas masks on the kids' faces. Why did they wait until 9 30PM?

The kids of Israel under 10, are fast asleep. They just took off their other masks for Purim, washed off their facepaints, and packed away their costumes until next year.

It's now 9 45PM, and the live TV coverage of downtown Baghdad looks pretty quiet. I guess the Purim parties are over as the US Airforce has just begun its bombing of Iraqi artillery positions.

Well, we went to the kids' bedrooms and as we adjusted their night lights, we placed the gas mask boxes near their beds. Both of us parents decided not to wake them from their Purim mask dreams to try on their gas masks as instructed by the Israeli Home Command a few minutes ago.

So friends in the Diaspora. We have put away our Purim masks, have tried on our masks, and will figure out how to shlep everything tomorrow morning around here, masks, books, talis/tefilin, school bags, lunch bags, briefcases, etc. The war has really begun according to SKYTV who never lies(?).

Haman and his sons are the targets as are the weapons of mass destruction. We Jews here in Israel salute the Allies, and as far as the French and Germans, they can go to hell. G-d is watching the world tonight, and perhaps in a few days, weeks, or months, the Hamans will disappear permanently.
