Does anyone have any experience with online publishing groups which make your writing, art, photography etc., into a real book for you? I have looked at Lulu.com after seeing an interview recently, and it seems a very inexpensive way of publishing, but thought I would ask here about people's experiences, good or bad, and what they know about these groups.

I haven't used any online publishing groups for book, but I have used a few online companies for printing on t-shirts and they never have the quality of "real" printing. So make sure that you check that they can deliver good enough quality for what you want to do. Other then that it have always worked well for me.

I had a friend that used an online publishing company but I've never done it. I'll see if I can get more info from her to share with you Cat.

Thanks both of you for your help.....maybe this will help motivate myself and my daughter to do the book together we have been talking about for a couple of years but doing nothing about organising the work for it. :cathappy:

Cat I talked to my friend, she said that the site she used turned out to be a big rip off. She only sold one book and that was to her sister. That was her experience. Sorry it wasn't better news.

Small, self-published, vanity press books either turn out to be enormous sleeper successes, or complete failures.

If the goal is to be publisehd and make money- it would be best to write a book and submit it around the the publishing houses most likely to be interested in the material.

If the goal is to write a book without worrying too much about the financial success (which does require marketing/etc), a vanity press might work just as well, and reduce the up front expenses of the project, as things are printed in limited runs, or on demand.

At this point I'm not really looking for commercial gain, though I guess if it happened it would be a bonus. Lulu says the promotion etc., is up to yourself which I am OK with as the main aim of our book is for us first, and probably a couple of family/friends. Our idea was to put a book together as a mother/daughter thing of our art. I am determined to make her see her art is just as good, if not better than mine...can you tell I am a big fan of hers?!! :cathappy:
