Never would have thought this would be possible, but the new "Rhino Blinds R180 3 Person See Through Hunting Ground Blind" is made of a fabric that is transparent one way and opaque the other way. Google it to see the video or the product. Unbelievable! This particular use is for observing game without being seen, and so

Couple gets frisky thinking they are all alone, hunter or photographer gets an eyefull

Or take the blind, cut it up to make a curtain that appears solid but is not. State's cheerleaders get changed on the bus, unaware of the growing crowd outside the bus...

One-way glass has been a thing for a long time. Just watch any police procedural television show. Of course, it requires careful lighting on each side of the glass to work, but still, it works. Could be a great hook for a sex story.

He wears Speedos of one-way cloth. His details are not visible from outside, but the alien parasites infesting his external genitalia have a clear view of surroundings, all the better to locate new targets for seduction & predation.

this could make an interesting premise for a National Nude Day Contest Story.

Well, the light day curtains made from fine mesh work the same way (until you turn lights on).

Not investigating the exact details of the material, I do suspect it's the elementary light trick, perhaps cleverly exaggerated somehow. The basis of it is very simple, a mesh barrier becomes transparent when viewing up close, especially if from the shaded side, while appears opaque from afar and/or well lit side.

This means apparent transparency of a hedgerow, for example, is direct function of the relative distance of observer and target to it, modified by sunlight direction and intensity. (As both a hunter and voyeur I have taken great advantage of such effects repeatedly).

Snipers use this kind of mesh all the time. They hang it up in front of themselves when inside a building and looking out a window. From the outside all you see is a dark room, but from behind the mesh you have a clear field of vison even through your scope. It's kinda cool of course, after a while it does get a little drafty. Although a .308 or .338 or even a .50 bullet doesn't leave that big a hole in the mesh.

What you are describing is like the famous carved wood walls of Persian harem lore, where up close you can see through the cracks, but from a distance all you see is the divider. While this product is a mesh system, the pictures seem to indicate you don't need to be close at all to the wall and they are still transparent.
