Detective Isabella "Bella" Russo
Age: 27

*****
"Come on...." Bella looked at her watch...another minute to go. "Please don't, please.." she said over and over to herself. Never in her life had she been so nervous, so...out of control until now.

She was so lost in her thoughts that it took her several seconds to realize her watch alarm was sounding. She turned it off as she walked back to the bathroom and looked on the counter... It was like her whole world stopped and she was walking in slow motion. She picked up the stick and saw the lines, confirming her suspicions right.

"OH SHIT!" She said out loud as she ran to the toilet to throw up...nope, it wasn't that she was disgusted, she was pregnant.

*~* One hour later *~*
As she walked into a sub contracted building for the NYPD, Bella kept her to herself, ignored everyone and their good mornings and went straight to her desk. Seeing her desk as she walked she realized there were a stack of files on there. With a muttered sigh, she took a seat and started to go through the files.

Her stomach still hadn't settled down and it crossed Bella's mind that she really had no one to ask about the pregnancy. Her mom had died over 17 years ago, her dad well, he was going to have a field day with this. No sisters, just brothers, all working for the Fire Department.

Her mind wandered back to how it all happened. One too many drinks, she wasn't on the pill, they had used protection... apparently, they beat the odds.

To make it all worthwhile for the gossipers out there, he was a fellow cop... Well, with a different department and it had been over 2 months ago when she and most of the department were at the Governor's Ball. She had a little too much to drink and was of course, hanging out with the guys. One thing led to another and well, she ended up having a one night stand.

Damn, what was probably worst was that she only knew his last name and rank...

Yeah, today was going to be a wonderful day...please note the sarcasm...

Detective David Garcia
Age: 30
--------------------

David woke up around 9, groaning as he looked at the clock. He could sleep for a week and it wouldn’t feel like it was enough. He walked the floors of his seemingly empty apartment before entering bathroom to start the day. David had been working for NYPD’s vice unit for over 5 years. That meant him dealing with drugs, gambling rings, prostitutes, sometimes all of the above or more. It also meant spending less time at the station and more time in the streets. At first it didn’t seem so bad, but as time went he wondered what the point was. He sends one drug dealer to Riker’s, another pops out. To him it was losing game.

He wanted to get out, yet something always told him to keep going, that what he was doing needed to be done. He hated that. As he sat there in the shower, his mind drifted off to that night at the Governor’s Ball. She apparently worked at the station too, but since he was rarely there he never met her. She was cute even without the 5 drinks David had when talking to her. David didn’t even know her name “Isabella” something. The whole night was a blur up until he woke up to an empty bed, he perfume still present on the pillow she laid on.

His mind stayed on that night as he got dressed and headed out. He never made an effort to look for her, nor did she seem to do the same. He choked it up to just a one time thing. Two lonely people who needed someone, that’s all it was. Deep down, part of him wanted more to come of it. He wanted the whole family, but he felt he was too late and most women would be wary of marrying a guy who could end up dead before they knew it.

Today was different. Normally David would be out, but the chief had been riding him on finishing his report and told him if he didn’t get them done, he’d have his badge. David knew he’d eventually get canned, but he’d rather it be for something other than no filing his paper work. Maybe today is what he needed, a break from the streets. A day to clear his head and no surprises.

Do I tell him?

Of course you do! It’s not like you cannot tell him…this isn’t a puppy Bella, this is a human being inside of you and now you know you’re going to have to take precautions at work. The Captain’s going to have to know also…

Bella let out a breath of frustration as she stared off while pouring her cup of coffee in the break room. Her thoughts were so compacted and clouded that she didn’t realize she was overfilling the cup until she felt the warm liquid seep through the leg of her suit from the counter…

“SHIT!” She said out loud without realizing it until 2 rookies looked up from their place in the break room and stared at her. She could’ve said something to them but didn’t. Bella wasn’t in the mood for any rookie cockiness or comebacks. Instead she grabbed a handful of paper towels and started to wipe up her mess.

After about 10 minutes, she finished up and headed back to her desk…setting her coffee aside, Bella looked at the stack of reports, just sitting there, waiting for her to attack them. Good Lord, if only she didn’t have to be here today, If only—

“Something wrong?” A voice asked, startling Bella, who was trying to get a hold of herself…

“Damnit Josh, I told you not to sneak up on me like that…”

“Detective, I did not sneak up on you…I said good morning first, you’re the one who’s preoccupied with God knows what.”

“Yeah? Well…” Bella stopped and huffed, shaking her head and forcing a smile, “Fine, just…I have a lot on my mind today, OK?”

“Like?” Detective Joshua Nichols, a transfer from Cleveland, Ohio, and Bella’s partner, gave Bella knowing look that said ‘You’re not fooling me’. The two had known each other since grade school and he had been transferred to his current assignment after Bella put in a good word for him.

“Like, it’s none of your business, besides, the quicker we get done with this damn paper work, the quicker we can get back on out there and do our job.” Bella told him as she reached for the first file.

“So, what? No Red Bull this morning?”

“No, just coffee…I got up late, besides, that stuff is bad for you…”

With a laugh that was loud, Joshua shook his head, “Yeah, something is definitely up Russo-“

“Look, just never mind OK? Just…be-“

That’s when ‘he’ caught her eye…the guy from the Governor’s Ball… Detective Garcia… why hadn’t she seen him before?

“Be what?” Josh asked, not looking up from his work. It took a few seconds to look up and when he did, he noticed Bella’s face went white as ghost, “Bella, what’s wrong?” He asked as he looked off in the direction she was staring at.

“I…I-I gotta go…I’ll—“ she didn’t finish as she nearly jumped up from behind her desk and took off toward the restroom…

David caught the woman running to the bathroom at the corner of his eye, but he didn’t think anything of it. ‘Looks like someone’s having a rough morning’ he thought as he walked to his desk. He forgot how the station looked from the inside. Hell, he wondered if he even had a desk. Sure enough though, there it was; desk in the corner with a nice stack of papers waiting for him. He made his way to the desk with a few eye on him, surprised that the big shot vice detective had managed to grace them with his presence.

He wasn’t well revered if liked. It was commonly thought that most detectives that worked vice are being bought off by dealers and such. They let little things slide in exchange for big information. David would never deny making deals, but he was far from being in anyone’s pocket. He was good cop, at least as good as someone working in vice could be.

David took out his first folder out of the pile on his desk and began his reports on his computer. He remembered the case well. A couple of guys downtown were using a newspaper stand as a front for selling heroin. The only problem they wouldn’t give the name of their supplier so it probably meant there were other places that were selling the same drugs. After finishing his first report, he looked at his watch. One report down, many more to go. He wasn’t sure why, but David felt this day wasn’t going to get any better.

Bella had taken her time to recover and try her best to calm down her queasy stomach to the best of her ability. She had looked up a few of the symptoms online regarding the early stages of pregnancy and to say the least, none of them seemed so...great.

She tried to remain passive for the better part of the morning, though she did seem preoccupied with her own thoughts, she knew her partner had some questions but knew better than to ask.

Bella, from time to time, kept glancing up over at the desk where Garcia sat, working on his reports. A few times, she had almost been caught, so she quickly looked down at her own work....it wasn't until around lunch time that she needed a break.

A break from the office, just from everyone in general.

"Hey," she said to her partner, Josh, "I'm gonna go grab something for lunch, I'll see you in a bit." She told him, not really asking and not waiting for him to invite himself to join her as she grabbed her jacket and hurried out of the building.

Perhaps, instead of lunch, a nice walk in the park would get her thoughts clearer about all this...

With 3 reports down, David began to feel trapped within the confines of his desk. He wasn’t meant for sitting at a desk and recalling every case he had since last year. It wasn’t something he liked looking back on. All the deals he had to make, all the bust he had to make, he didn’t look back on any of it fondly. To make things even more uncomfortable, the woman behind kept looking over at him. He could catch glimpses of her staring in the reflection of his computer. He didn’t think much of it until he got a good look at her.

It all came back to him. That night at Governor’s Ball, the night of a few to many, the morning of waking up to an empty. Isabella Russo, no wonder she kept looking at him. Truth be told, David had no idea what to do. Going up to her now would only cause a scene, but to act like nothing happened seemed even worse.

To his luck, she seemed to be leaving for her break. It seemed like a good time to see what was going on. He didn’t follow right away. He waited until she was out of sight before he got up and followed her. He’d have to shadow her and wait until she stopped before saying anything and seeing what was up with her.

There was no way Bella could've known she was being followed. Her mind was a cluttered mess with thoughts about what to do with her situation.

Of course she wasn't going to get rid of the baby, that thought never crossed her mind. But she wasn't ready for a child... she was a cop for goodness sakes... her job was full of danger, and to make it worst, so was the father's...

Oh lord, the father... she thought as she stopped on a small bridge that was over a small man-made creek in the park. Bella looked into the water, but wasn't really seeing it...

That's when she felt it something jab her side, bringing her back from her thoughts...there was only one feeling like that in the world, and it came from the barrel of a gun. She held in a gasp as she didn't move.

"Don't scream...don't say a damn thing... just give me your money and we'll both go our seperate ways..." said a gruff voice.

Bella could only nod, damn fine day to get mugged...but with NYC, what were your chances? Well, only like 1 in 2.... "Listen, don't do anything stupid OK? I don't have a bag, or a wallet...all I have is a 20 in my right pocket of my jacket...take it and go, all right?"

David kept his distance from Bella. He could tell by the she walked, how her looked down that was else where. In some way, he wasn’t sure hwy he was even following her to begin with. They had a one night stand and from the way she looked at him back at the office, she hadn’t forgotten. He didn’t even know what he would say. ‘Hey about that night we fucked….’ the introduction he composed in his head was laughable if not blunt. She was very beautiful to say the least, maybe if things were different they would have had a shot at being together.

Sadly though, they were both cop. Aside from the potential talk amongst co-workers, the offbeat of one of them getting killed in the line of duty was something that David didn’t want to think about. He’d never want to feel that or someone else feel the angst of him getting killed.

He kept his distance as Bella stopped at the bridge. He looked away for a moment. He wondered exactly what he would say to her. Nothing came to mind, he was drawing a blank. He was never one for planning things out and it looked like now wasn’t the time to start. He would simply have to go to her and talk. As he Look back at her, he saw a man behind her. Even at a distance, he could see her body tense, the man taller than her as he leaned forward with his hand out. He was mugging her.

Maybe it was memory from childhood, or maybe it was the many time he saw a woman get hurt by some random asshole, but David’s blood boiled. He wanted to run at him, smash his face in the floor and shove his face into the water below until he begged David to take him to jail. He didn’t though, it wouldn’t be good for him, for the NYPD, or for Bella. He kept his composure and began to sneak his way to her. He kept clear of the man’s sight who was still on Bella. He walked casually to the bridge where they both were as he kept a low profile until he was right behind them both. With a lifting the withdraw of his gun from the holster under his coat, pulled the hammer and aimed it at the man’s head.

“Put the gun down now!” said David. His voice was stern and strong, a hint of anger as the gun clicked ready to kill the man right there. Slowly the man put the gun on the ground as David ordered him to lay on the ground. He looked over at Bella for a moment and back at the man as he began to cuff him “You really are stupid, you know that” said David “Mugging a cop of all people.” With his knee jammed into the man’s he got out his phone and called for back up. He then looked back at Bella. “Are you okay?” he asked.

“Are you okay?”

It was an easy question but everything happened so fast that Bella still couldn't answer it. Of course she was OK, if things had been different...if she hadn't been in a pregnant state, she would've taken out the guy herself.

But things had changed dramatically and it was only when she was looking David face to face that it all came crashing down on her.

Of course she was about his answer his question in the general sense but she didn't get that far. Soon they were surrounded by the cops that patrolled the park and the mugger was taken away.

In her mind, Bella tried to keep her mind on one thing. This incident would only generate more reports. She rolled her eyes at that.

When all the commotion had finally died down, she turned to find David. Seeing him, she approached him and cleared her throat before speaking, "Hey...thanks for what you did back there..." she told him, trying to sound nonchalant, "So, how did you see what was happening?" Deep down, she knew the answer but wanted to see what he would say.

It all happened so fast. Back up came in less than a minute what with only being a block or so away, they asked Bella is she was okay and came to talk to David. The had insisted that Bella take the rest of the day off and David insisted I’d look after as long as she wished. He only followed because he wanted to talk to Bella, now here he was saving her from some damn mugger. He couldn’t talk to her about that night, not now.

He could only assume she felt guilty more than scared. She was a cop after all, and for her to be vulnerable like just now might have taken a shot at her pride.

After the cops took the guy away, it was just the tow of them. David was surprised when Bella thanked him, but he was even more surprised when she asked how he saw her. David though of making something by saying he was just in the neighborhood, but he didn’t. He needed to get it out now. “I was… following you” he confessed. “I wanted to talk to you about that night… at the Governor’s ball” David had no idea if it that meant anything to her other than pure speculation. Still he needed to get it out there. “You mind if we go sit somewhere?”

Bella knew she should've been mad that he was following her but she wasn't. There was something about the look in his eyes that allowed Bella to just nod when he asked if there was some place they could go somewhere and sit.

Motioning for him to follow her, Bella stuffed her hands in her jacket pockets, her mind was racing for something to break the ice.

"So..." she shrugged and smiled, "What a way to meet again, right?" Even though the rush of the city was around them, it seemed like they were the only two around.

Bella knew a place they could go, so she led them there, it was a small bistro and the crowd was minimal. After they found a table in the back, Bella found herself extremely hungry. Ordering the day's special, she finally could turn her full attention to David, "Well...about that night...?"

This was so unlike me. David was a detective for the NYPD's vice unit. He spent his days getting information out of people, interrogating and convincing people into getting me what he needed to find some would be drug dealer or pimp. Yet as David sat there opposite Bella in some bistro, he found himself at a lose for words. "Yeah..." he began as he looked out the window for a moment before looking back at Bella. "I don't know what happened that night. Maybe it was the drinks or perhaps something did click between us, I don't know. But in the end we wound up.... together."

Despite his intoxication that night, he could remember the feeling he experienced when he was with her. It was so much deeper that just pure sexual gratification, what he felt was completion. He would never admit it, but he wanted the whole wife and kids thing. He wanted to hold his wife as they slept, race to the hospital to see his child born, he wanted a reason to go home. But he fought it, because he couldn't dare bring him the world he was in.

David's hand ran along the table as he began to speak again "I don't know if it meant anything to you... but it did to me. I just want to know if that night was just a one night stand or if it actually meant something." He had no right to put her on the spot like that, but he needed this, he needed the closure even it meant breaking his heart.

Wow, this was crazy!

Bella's mind raced and her heart sped up! She wasn't sure if it was in a good way or bad, and she also didn't want to spoil the moment but she had to wonder, why was he telling her this now?

Leaning back in her chair, her arms crossed under her breasts, she thought about what he said, but David was right. Something between them clicked. At the time she figured it was just the alcohol...but she had enough sense at the time to back out of going home with David. Yet she didn't.

And she didn't want to call it a consequence but the outcome of it all, she was pregnant.

"You know David..." she began, choosing her words carefully, "I'm not sure what to think. As they say in the movies, perhaps it was meant to be... maybe we were just two lost souls trying to find a way to comfort each other, but what ever it was, I like to think it was fate..."

Now here comes the hard part.... Bella thought as she leaned over, her elbows resting on the table top, the words that will see what his true reaction is....

"All I know is that I did feel something that night and well, I didn't want to say anything because, I wasn't sure how you'd feel...and now, due to the consequences, it's something we're going to have to figure out together because, I'm pregnant."

She kept her eyes lowered because she didn't want to see his initial reaction to the news.

I'm pregnant.

The words resonated through David as leaned back a bit, his eyes looking away as he processed it all. Bella was pregnant and he was the father. He dreamed of that for so many years and fought it from happening and yet here he was. One night with Bella and he was going to be a daddy. Maybe he should have thought about the dangers and precautions of both of them being cops, but he didn't. He leaned forward and rested his hand on her's. His finger moving along her's.

"That night seemed to be more than just us being drunk?" he said as he stared into her eyes. "We talked even before we had drinks and then.... you know" David nodded to her stomach. "I've fought so hard to not start a family even though I wanted it more than anything. And now that you're here with our baby, I don't want to lose that."

It was then that David took a leap of faith as he leaned closer until his lips touched her's. His heart swelled and the back of his neck burned "I want to be with you, I want a family, but only if you want me."

"I want to be with you, I want a family, but only if you want me."

They didn't kiss exactly. Bella thought about what he said. Thought about it all.

She had thought he would run or at the very least, deny it all. But he didn't. Taking in a deep breath, she smiled, her eyes connecting with his, "I do want you... I want it all, but..." their career... her smile quickly faded

Bella didn't want to say anything more, she didn't want to think about the negative, she wanted the positive damnit! With a soft sigh, she kissed David and whispered to him, "I have the rest of the day off... how about we go back to my place and talk more?"

Right now, Bella wanted to be in David's arms, held by him...have what they couldn't that night..finally just let them enjoy some time together...

"Yeah" David whispered as he paid for the food and took Bella's hand as they hailed a cab. David knew deep down that there was a lot of risk in what they were doing, but he didn't care. Neither of them wanted to worry about the dangers of them both being cops, they just wanted to enjoy tonight together. All during the cab ride to Bella's, all David could do was hold her. Never had anything felt so perfect, so right then holding the mother of his child in his arms.

Truth be told, David didn't want to talk about anything. He wanted to be there for Bella no matter what. He wanted to be there for every doctor appointment and all. Though there would talk as to if they would live together and if so, where? He pushed it back though, tonight was about them. Tonight was for them alone.

After giving the cabbie her address, Bella held David's hand as the cab made it's way through the Friday traffic. Even though the ride took longer than normal, it didn't bother Bella one bit.

She had the next day off and even though she wasn't sure about him, she hoped David could find a way to spend the rest of the night with her as well as the next day...

When they reached her apartment building, not a word was said as she escorted David to her apartment. She unlocked the door and let them both in before locking it behind them.

"So...this is it..." she said quietly as she leaned against the closed door, "Now what?" She asked quietly, almost nervously...

Now what?

David didn't know how to answer. He didn't want to answer. There was so much they'd had to think about. Doctors, living together, Bella having to take maternity leave. I didn't know where to start. Truth be told, he didn't want to. He was tired, tired of today, tired of being alone, tired of not having anything to come home.

He moved closer to Bella as she leaned against the door, his hand rested on her stomach where our baby rested and inched his nose to her's. "Now nothing." he said softly to her, a soft kiss given to her as he nuzzle her nose with mine. "I don't want to worry about what we'll do about the baby, I just want tonight to be about us, and I want to wake up with you next to me."

Bella could only nod in reply. Her eyes were locked with David's own. The words he spoke, the truth she could see in his eyes, she knew he was a good man... she knew that from the beginning...

Maybe that was why she ran?

Maybe that was why fate brought them back together?

She felt his warm hand on her stomach and knew that he would do what he had to protect herself and their child. As she would also.

But like him, she didn't want to think of the future just yet, she just wanted to be with him, feel his skin against her own... and this time, no one would be leaving when it was all over...

Reaching over, Bella pushed his coat open and then off his shoulders. She wasn't sure what was coming over her, but she needed him NOW. Fumbling with the clasps on his shoulder holster for his gun, she finally got it off with some amount of ease. Her fingers then flew to the buttons of his shirt and this time, instead of trying to be careful, she yanked his shirt open, sending buttons flying all over as she ran the palms of her hands over his chest, her nails lightly scorching his skin...

David was a bit shocked by Bella's curiosity, yet he didn't mind. He welcomed it as his lips found her's. His hand grasping her breast as her finger nails trace along his chest. His hand began to move under her shirt and under bra wanting to feel those lovely breast that her remembered that one night. He was gone, drowning in a sea of desire and want. All he could think about was taking Bella and filling her once more.

With a bit of maneuvering, he somehow found himself pulling her on his lap. Their embrace halting only for a moment as He began to lift her shirt and tossing it to the side along with his torn shirt. His lips finding her chest as he moved his hips against her, There was no subtly in what they both wanted.
