Once you've published...

...do you ever read over you own stories, just for pleasure? (I.e. without getting hung up on mistakes you spot!)

Do you prefer your own stories, or others'?
I actually quite like to read them a few weeks or months later. Of course, as Iā€™m blonde, I forget the plots totally within a short timespan and can read them afresh šŸ¤.

I find no shame in enjoying my own stories.

I revisit them for several reasons, really:

They're typically MY fantasies, so why wouldn't I enjoy them?

If I'm plotting a sequel, it helps to refresh my memory on what's happened so far.

It helps me learn. Because yes, I spot mistakes and think of better ways I could have said something.

And sometimes, it's just nice to revisit an old friend.

Yes, I do. Not often, but I do. I also write so many that occasionally when I go back to a really old one I can hardly believe I wrote it and it's freshly entertaining to me.

I re-read a lot, yeah. Helps with continuity when you're trying to remember everyone's names and back stories, if for some stupid reason you decided to set everything you wrote in the same place with a lot of the same people. It's good, reading back and remembering how much you liked a character, and that they should totally get another go around.

If I didn't like reading what I wrote, I would never have let it get to the published stage...!

Yes, I re-read my own stories. Partly because I'm often working on another story with one or more of the same characters, but also because I know it'll be a story which includes things I like and nothing I don't like, and people I enjoy the company of.

It's interesting how my mind skims some bits and wants to get to other bits of a story. There's the clunky sections and typos which make me wince, but I hope I'm improving at story-telling.

I mainly go back and re-read because I tend to write chapters of multi-part series. I go back to remind myself of any details I want to carry over from chapter to chapter.

Iā€™ve re-read a few times for pleasure, but normally donā€™t revisit them for that.

I had a story published on Lit for about a year, which rubbed quite a few people wrong. Many of the negative comments were about my attempt at dialect; so eventually I rewrote it to remove the dialect. Basically every sentence was changed, so it got posted as a "new" story. Again it rubbed people wrong; and this time, someone flagged it and had it banned as "violent". I could never see that it actually violated any of the Lit rules in any way shape or form (and, as we can always say, there are far worse stories published every week...). However, I was just exhausted of the whole thing, so I posted it to a different story site and was happy to forget about it.

Anyway, just got up the courage to reread it for the first time in 9 months or so, and... damn, it's good!

To check details in previous chapters so dumb mistakes aren't made (at least not too often), yes; for pleasure, no. I find myself invariably reaching for the self-flagellation whips, and my back is scarred enough.

After all the time spent writing it, rarely, and nowhere soon after submission.

I'll reread something if a reader sends me a note about it, like when they point out an error I made, in which case I'll reread that part, smack my forehead and move on, or... Even better, when they point out a scene that really got them hot - what can I say, turning readers on is my kink, I love rereading a scene knowing someone got off reading it šŸ˜

Sketch the outline of a neatly-wrapped fairy tale, incorporate one-dimensional protagonists and antagonists, and add superfluous details, depictions, and events that add absolutely nothing. Reiterate familiar phrases and cliches that please the disadvantaged, culminate with a saccharine and uplifting ending - and you will receive praise from the masses.
I'll count myself among the writers guilty of writing saccharine and uplifting ending. I write what I like to read. I'm grateful that my stuff resonates with other people, but if it didn't, I'd still write it.

No, you wouldn't.
Yes, I would. I already did. Literotica is just one of added stops for my stories.

And what demonstrable basis do you have for "knowing" any of this? You've just shown up at Literotica and have less than a month's experience with posting stories here.

If you put the characters through the wringer, maybe they earn the HEA, nothing to shy away from. It does resonate with people.

Talking of resonating, just finished the latest story and misc. commenter nailed it, calling out the HEA scene in about 40 ch. from now. Bugger. At least this post proves I didn't rewrite for the audience.

I revisit older stories from time to time and I've had both types of reactions
Christ, what was I thinking?
Damn, I nailed that one.

I often go back to stories I've written, to be sure that I'm not repeating a scenario. And to be honest, I might be thinking that if I had to write it again, I could do it better, and resolve to avoid that situation in the future.
