On voting

My cat got curious so I was wondering about the high and low flux of voting on poems or stories. I'm fairly easygoing on voting, but recently I had a poem that actually had a little red 'H' by the title with 16 votes (happy neo) and this morning no 'H' and 7 votes (sad neo). Is this a glitch in the system or vote adjustment on Laurel's end?

You got me buddy. I've found that votes here tend to appear and reappear like the Cheshire Cat. Maybe you need to bring back alligator shoes. You send that thing after me; I'll give all your darn poems 5s. :D

Think of it as the tides. You don't really need to know why or how, but they're a fact of life. :p

:p I was just thinking that... lol

shooes away my curious cat and learns to ride with the tide

the cat wouldn't stay shooed

It's what I had thought; a program that checks for multiple ISP numbers. Finding both 'helper' and 'saboteur' votes. So if you find your votes jumping up and down it is because Laurel is readjusting them.

And the cat shooed

well dear neo, at least you know you had helpers--my scores usually went up, lol. :D

Neo,

Just saw this, and had to wonder why when I said on the new poems thread that it had been told to me that I claimed to have praised one way,and voted another, that there might be something wrong with the system.

There were two posts that followed mine up, one sort was from Lauren who said something to the effect that she offered on this thread here (and no problem with her saying that).

The other post excoriated me, vaudeville style, as being a liar, that there was nothing wrong with the system. I won't bring up any other alternatives to that thinking (and there are a few), but some of the responses here seem to justify that there might be something wrong with the system, or one of the alternative views might be at fault, other than that I was a liar.

My thanks to you for bringing this up separately, and I was glad to see a few responses that could lend credance to what you say, though it is mildly different than what I said (I did say the same thing, but also that the scores may not have been reported properly, or that I even knew which poem was being talked about).

My thanks to the others who also said something here too. If you didn't respond to the other, maybe it was because you didn't want to get involved in what seemed like a dung heap at best. That is understandable.

well cb9, sometimes you have to wade through the dung to get to the cow, unless its in a barn, which is totally different..I think :D

Vote and Move On

I vote my conscience here (and elsewhere), and if other people think I lied or didn't support them or did support someone *they* don't like, know what? Too damn bad--their issues, not mine.

The only person who really knows is me (and here Laurel, I guess--but I somehow doubt she has time to conduct investigations).

And what's more after I vote, unless I think a poem is really memorably great (I can think of about 6 of those since I've been here) or really really awful (many more but I rarely vote on those), I forget by the next day. Sorry, nothing personal--I just have too much other stuff to remember. Important stuff like fill the gas tank, pay bills, etc. It's not worth worrying over. :)

And in case you're wondering (and even if you're not, lol), here are the greats, IMHO, in no particular order.

Stylization of Self (Lauren)
Spending Time Near Her Face (smithpeter)
Into the Mountains (Eve)
Hallmark Quickie (woof)
Naomi (Risia Skye)
Senna's poem about cities and cities (the one where he sings Butterfly Time, lol)
Mystery Lost (Daisie)

and uh

Lester Leaps In (especially that one by uh whatsherface, hehe).

Ok, 8. Oh and Cordie's sonnet, Abstract. 9.

Hey that was fun! What are other folks' favorites?

"Yes, I'm Paranoid. The question is, am I paranoid enough." (in Glamorama)

Yeah, but she's real cute. And what the heck is that slithery babe in neo's AV doin? She is so up to no good. (I'm sorry neo, I have determined that I really like harrassing you about your AVs, lol. You'll just have to deal.) :D

You can never be too thin or too paranoid. Wait. You can never be too rich or too paranoid? No. Ok. You can be thin and paranoid, but probably not rich. That sounds about right. Yup. :p

P.S. Lauren, y'know Gertrude Stein's last words were--

What is the question?

Sharp as a tack, she was. Didn't Pessoa say something like that?

Dearest Ange,

You know I love you, but how on God's green earth can you list that absolute doggerel of mine as one of your favorite poems?

Even I think it's crap. Don't get me wrong, I think it's mildly amusing (Mostly because it's mostly true, as far as you know, more or less(mostly more, well, it's more than half true, but also a little bit less than mostly true)), but sheesh, it's nothing special.

In my defense, though, How could I write anything but doggerel?

edited to add something relevant to the thread and also to add a missing parenthesis

Neo, the voting here has nothing whatsoever to do with quality, taste, skill, or eroticism. No offense to anyone who has won an award, but if something good wins, it's pure luck.

I knew you'd end up in this thread giving me dog crap about saying Hallmark Quickie is a great poem, but I think it is. I read it, what, a year ago? It made me laugh like like hell then, and it still does. There are lines in it that are so funny I can quote them (i.e., "but what's made by man may be unmade by me"), so it meets my criteria for greatness (staying power and I can quote it).

Now roll over and I'll scratch your belly and make you do that funny thing with your leg. :D

good morning everyone :) hope sweet dreams abounded

well, here is one of my very favorites, by someone I have never seen reviewed on here, I have at least one favorite by all you "regular" poets though...

halo by Blur of serenity.

it really touches me somehow, cant say why, but I love this one

have a beautiful day, maria

PS, my AV? she thanks you for saying she's cute,..you know, she was really jealous when I had Marilyn up there

All right... I buried that particular curious cat. No more Q's on voting. I could careless about contests as it would be my nic that would be receiving awards and not me ;)

As for me, I don't normally vote—I send feedback on poems that caught my eye and held my attention long enough to read the whole piece. (Which really has to be something since I have ADHD.)

I don't have a favorite poem here on Lit. I've only just begun to crawl out from underneath my rock. Guess that the spinner would be a good start to find a fav and check out the new poems thread

If anyone has suggestions for me to look at, please let me know.

stupid question

I know this question will sound redundant and infantile but:

What is the deal with voting?

168 reads and 2 votes? Is that a normal ratio? Are people just lazy, reticent... What? Enligten me!

I always vote. Voting is fun. It makes me feel like a panel judge, flipping his stenciled placard as the crowd moans, shrieks and sighs--getting off. More people should get hip to the simple satisfaction of raising your Tiny Voice into the Void! Apathy is a canker sore, people! Voting is Listerine!

what if anything is normal...
I think denis, that your ratio and mine..in the instance of my most read poem, Let me touch you..I have 352 reads and 3 votes... so I dont know whats normal, but I think that the person I wrote it for reads it a lot..at least I hope so :)

as for stories, I have one, posted just last month with 22,000 reads and 54 votes..so I guess there is more voting going on with the erotic stories....who knows... if ya figure it out, you can enlighten me

22,000 reads and 54 votes for a single story? That's actually really very good to tell you the truth. And in that it has many factors: The category, how well it's written, catchy title, blah-blah... As for poems. That looks to be average. Erotic poems seem to get more reads (... pervs) and so does illustrated (and that could be considered perverted too; depending on the poem, the illustration, and where you put your words on said illustration... Hmm ).

So what does that tell you about your readers? ;)

rock the vote

Maria's stories are awesome! She deserves every vote she garters... uh, I mean,
garners...

Plus, she can spell
e n l i g h t e n, so she is way ahead 'o me!

And Neo, I love my readers... all sixteen of them! You should learn to love yours, too. Who knows, maybe this thread will start a funky groundswell of goodwill, and social responsibility, like in the movie, "Pay It Forward.' That movie, incidentally, I would give about a "2", and not easy to dance to, either. At all...
