Muslim Spain, now -- that was a brilliant culture!

Be very, very careful not to think or talk like the white nationalist Charles Martel Society. The completion of the Reconquista was a great day in world history and the culmination of 700 years of resistance to the Muslim invasion of Europe.
Unfortunately, Europe is going to have to do a repeat fairly soon.
Nobody in this thread so far has any pretensions to being a historian but Chloe will be an adequate counterpoint! Spain did not exist as a political concept from the time of the Romans, say about 300 BC followed by the Visigothic kingdoms until about 730 AD followed by the Berber/Arab Caliphate for almost 800 years - about 1100 years all up. Eventually after the Moslems had ruled fairly peacefully for 800 years the Catholic Barbarian Kingdoms replaced the previous ruling minorities. The later kingdoms, particularly of Al Andalus in the south were highly civilized and the Jews and Moslems lived there in amity until they were both evicted. The United Spain then set about conquering South and Central America killing millions in their Gods name and that of progress. Incidentally they robbed those lands of so much gold that it engendered the Iberian peninsula in such rampant inflation that there was no economic recovery until the last quarter of the 20th century. The completion of the Reconquista was a great day in world history and the culmination of 700 years of resistance to the Muslim invasion of Europe.

Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Civilization and Islam cannot co-exist.
He was raised Catholic -- he really had no god but the German Volksgeist. The best example is the man, your fellow Catholic brought up in the delightful mountain meadows of sub Alpine Austria who became Chancellor of Germany

Islam, apart from its initial expansion has generally been much less disruptive of life than Christianity. The recent problems the West has had with Islam has all been with the Wahabi Sunni sect out of Saudi Arabia. Shia Islam revolted against the Shah imposed on Iran by US oil interests in 1954 but this unresolved dispute is an exception. The Ultimate idiocy was when the USA attacked Iraq , sold the campaign as revenge for 9/11 which was a bit much when one considers that 9/11 was carried out by 20 Saudis and 3 Eqyptians.
The real point Chloe is that all organized religions are capable of being weaponized for particular/sectional political interests. Islam, Christianity, Zoroastrianism, Budhism and Paganism have all been recruited to justify the slaughter of entire populations. It is humbling to note however that no group has achieve killing efficiency at remotely the level achieved by professing Christians. The best example is the man, your fellow Catholic brought up in the delightful mountain meadows of sub Alpine Austria who became Chancellor of Germany
The disgrace, numb nuts, was the Umayyad conquest of Hispania in 711-718 AD.You do understand, don't you, that that was a national disgrace, and no occasion, now, for the gloating triumphalism which The Federalist appears to be expressing?
Saudi Arabia just rang in the New Year showcasing the level of their advanced Islamic civilization by beheading six men last Wednesday. Also, if the Inquisition condemned you to death, you were simply burnt at the stake, in public. The Inquisition did not make use of elaborate underground death-traps like in Poe's "The Pit and the Pendulum."
You do realize that the Inquisition was only tangentially related to Reconquista (the removal of Moors) which culminated in 1492 after a centuries long effort. The Moors were considered to be conquerors and occupiers, they were seen as a military and political enemy due to their historical dominance in Spain. The Reconquista was explicitly a campaign to reclaim territory from Muslim control. The Jews were seen as Heretics. Jews were accused of heresy, "deicide," and economic exploitation, they did not pose a direct military threat. Thus the difference from the subject of this thread. You of course are free to start a thread exploring Torquemada and the Inquisition.Do you also realize that The Inquisition drove all Jews from Spain?
They did erect one of the largest slave trades in the history of the World. The Islamic slave trade (Arab slave trade) spanned over a a thousand years involving the enslavement and transportation of millions of people across Africa, the Middle East, and parts of Asia. Between the 16th and the early 20th Century over a million Europeans were enslaved by Muslims. The Islamic Caliphate was the most brilliant civilization west of China when there was scarcely such thing as a town in England or a literate person in Germany.

See post #27.You can add in all of North Africa, which was Christian until the Islamic invasion. Time for another Reconquista.
Ditto Syria and Egypt - the original foundational countries of Christianity
And then we add Asia Minor, which was Greek and Christian until it was subject to ethnic and religious cleansing
Also Arabia, which was primarily made up of Jewish and Christian tribes before Islam
No no no, we need a lot more Crusades and Reconquistas, starting with Europe and moving on to the traditionally Christian countries. They have seen fit to invade us. It's entirely appropriate to respond proportionately.
You are an idiot. And then they pushed the deadly shots
The House of Saud was the regime George H.W. Bush went to war to defend. Remember that before "Operation Desert Storm" there was "Operation Desert Shield," which amounted to placing American troops in SA, on the assumption that SA was Hussein's next target.Saudi Arabia just rang in the New Year showcasing the level of their advanced Islamic civilization by beheading six men last Wednesday.
Absolute nonsense! Cicero was responsible for the transcription of the work of Plato and Aristotle into Latin three hundred years after their deaths. Nearly six hundred years before the philosophy of Islam emerged. The only thing overrated is its originality -- the Muslims got a lot of their civilization from classical Greek sources. But at least they did preserve those books after they were entirely lost in Europe -- we would not have a single volume of Plato without the Muslims.
Sure, but how many copies of Cicero's translations survived the fall of the Western Empire, were preserved in Church libraries, and were available in Europe before the Crusades?Absolute nonsense! Tell us how that speaks to their level of civilization. The House of Saud was the regime George H.W. Bush went to war to defend. I hope you did not vote for GHWB.
Give up while you still have a pair of legs to get you off the field to the nearest shade tree.Sure, but how many copies of Cicero's translations survived the fall of the Western Empire, were preserved in Church libraries, and were available in Europe before the Crusades?
It says nothing good about Bush's.Tell us how that speaks to their level of civilization.
