Do you believe that only through the legislative process should the federal government legalize (or not legalize) gay marriages, thus prohibiting the states from enacting laws recognizing (or not recognizing) gay marriages?

This is a basic human rights issue and should be delt with nationwide, not on a case by case basis in the states themselves.

what makes it a basic human right? all it is, after all, is a license.

The 14th Ammendment guarentees the equal protection of the law to all citizens.
The Supreme Court ruled in Brown v Board of Education that Separate, but Equal was unconstitutional.
They ruled in Loving v Virginia that marriage is a "basic civil right".
Activist judges, my ass. Gay marriage is already legal.

What about the 10th Amendment? It says that everything not EXPRESSLY addressed in the constitution is to be left to the states. Marriage is a legal institution and subject to legal definitions.
Keep in mind political winds change, and not always to our liking. If one counts on the Federal Government to be the final word on all issues, dont be mad if the views of someone on the other side of the country makes your choices for you.

homosexuals (gay is an emotion) should be allowed to get hitched just like hetero's...nuff said..

I unfortuanetly don't trust the federal government enough to make this a federal government issue. If George Bush gets elected in the next election, he'll ban gay marriage and if John Kerry gets elected in the next election, he'll make crappy civil unions legal in all states, so getting gay marriage legal will be nearly impossible. Civil Unions do not nearly give you all the same rights as a marriage does. Do not let the conservatives fool you.

i like to think of marriage as an emotional commitment myself... government should have no business in it period...

and further more.. anyone who is against gay marriage because it infringes on sanctity of their marriage... needs to look at the other three fingers pointing back at them...

someone else's marriage is not about other people.. it's about themselves... i just don't understand the argument... all it's about is a distaste for another person's choice... kind of like abortion...

silly radical righties..... trix are for kids....

While I'd like to agree with you that government shouldn't be involved, the fact is that it is involved. The struggle for gay marriage is focused on getting those 1,138 rights that we don't have. If my partner is in the hospital and is very sick and only family can visit her...I can't go. What we think about ourselves doesn't matter, it's what the government thinks that matters. And as of right now, except in Massachusetts, the gov't is dumb.

(Keep in mind that licenses issued to gay couples in Massachusetts don't apply anywhere else in the nation. If you are on vacation together and one of you is in an accident, the family can fly out and visit, but you still can't until the partner is stabilized enough to go back to Massachusetts.)

Hey, now I've put a Bee Gees song into my head! http://www.amanita.net/images/smilies/musical_note.gif

Hee, nope! It was "Massachusetts" -
Feel I'm goin' back to Massachusetts,
Something's telling me I must go home.

But now I have that AND Stayin' Alive mixed in my head. Yikes!

The Kristian Konservative Koalition keeps telling us that Gay Marriage will destroy the institution of marriage. I have yet to hear one explain how.

For once I'm glad I live in massachusettes. We may have everything else crappy, but at least we have some judges with common sense...

Why if we allow homosexuals to get married, then we must allow polygamy and bestiality, and sex with trees and the world will fall apart. Gay marriage will be the end of our nation!

....or not.

Yeah, that's what they said about interracial marriage.

But I keep wondering, what would be so bad about that other stuff (well except bestiality)? They just don't have a logical leg to stand on, of course.

They keep screaming sanctity of marriage, sanctity of marriage...

Well, I'm going to have to be shown that it exists before I worry about it being endangered, and with a divorce rate over 50%? Sanctity my shiny metal ass. [/rant]

Personally, I have no problem if people want to have sex with trees.
But not more than one tree at the same time. That would be perverted.
And no saplings!

Marriage is a scary thing. I don't want it, and I don't want all the guilt that is associated with it. We (my partner and I) are fine without it...because unlike some (more than less) straight couples we don't need a piece of paper to tell us it is bad to cheat on your SO.

I just feel that if I pay taxes, I should have equal rights. I really think everyone should...so if you want to hump trees behind closed doors...I say go for it.

on the flip side...no one except sickos thinks animals and children are ok to have sex with...so take it out of the issue.

They would apply here in Oregon. All marriages from other states are recognized here.

By now I am sure most of you know of Oregons measure 36. It is a measure to ammend our State Constitution to read marriage is between a man and a woman. The Christian Collition took up a crusade to collect signitures for this to go on the election ballot. I am not even going to get into the reasons they want this and the agruments for why they want you to vote yes on this measure. Guru has done that over at the GB. The main reason is because GOD says marriage is between a man and woman.

If this is the basis of there argument (president, bible thumpers, etc...) and they want to bring the church into it, then the church's need to start paying taxes.

What about those of us who do not believe in the Christian God and can not practice are religous beliefs because these laws are being made?

I know this is a rant so disregard any rambling you do not understand. it is late.
