I'm not exactly sure who made this quote, but it is being widely discussed in academic and political circles.
I have my own theories of what this quote means. But I think for each individual, group, or nation this quote means something different. How do you interpret it?

I think your perceptions are coloured largely by the fact that only 10% of the US population has a passport, few Americans go abroard and a lot that do only go because it's with the millitary, whereas most UK citizens will go abroard at some point in their life if only to go on holiday.
Travel is the best mind altering drug you'll ever find.

I am one of the Americans who does travel- had my first passport when I was 9 months old (with my mom.)
I'd point out though that just because Americans don't travel out of the U.S. it doesn't mean that they don't travel at all. This is a huge country- we can spend our entire lives here and still not see a fraction of all we have to offer right here at home. There are many states I've never been to yet. UK, on the other hand, is tiny in comparison. You almost HAVE to travel outside your own little world or you'll run out of new places to go! After all, the place is "quaint."![]()

Yes America is huge and you will see a lot of "Americana" but you need to see the world you really live in not just the country.
And without wishing to start a fight here do you even realise just how "insular" you reply is ? it could almost be a text book example......."Hey why should I go anyplace else when America is so big.....what the hell is worth leaving the States for anyway".

Yes, I do. It sounds exactly as I meant it to sound. It is the exact answer you will get from many Americans, like it or not.
And why exactly do the people who want to travel in "just" America " "need to see the world"? Lots of them are perfectly happy right here. They are already in the best place on earth, why leave?
Remember, I said that I "do" travel the world. But I won't condemn those that want to stay here at home. Especially now. I won't be traveling outside of the U.S. myself in the near future. It is safer right here.
