Aurora blinked with confusion a few times before realizing where she was. She had finally fallen asleep after what seemed like hours of alternating between panic and despair. She’d dreamt she was home, that it was six months ago and she was at the winter ball with her boyfriend, Liam. She was wearing the beautiful burgundy velvet and lace gown that her parents had surprised her with. They had met up with their friends when they got there and gotten tipsy on wine. Towards the end of the night she had let Liam get handsy while they made out in a dark corner.
At the time the evening hadn’t been anything that special, just a normal celebration like the ones that were thrown tons of times a year. Now though as the memory of the dream flashed through her mind she yearned to be back there. Instead though she had woken up here, in this empty room, far away from everything she knew and loved.
It took her a few minutes to work up the will to get up and out of bed but once she did she saw a tray of food sitting on the floor near the door. Her stomach growled and she brought the tray over to the bed. It was another stew of some kind, slightly different than the last one. It seemed like there was less than the last time and she thought about what Tyrn had said, all the hardships the people here faced on a regular basis. The food was again bland but knowing that people here were starving on a regular basis left her feeling grateful she was getting food at all. It would have been nice to think it was because Tyrn wasn’t entirely awful but she was fairly sure he was only feeding her because he didn’t want her to die until he was done torturing her. She finished the stew quickly and set the tray back by the door.
She wasn’t sure what was going to happen, when Tyrn might show up or have her brought to him. The not knowing only added to her nerves as the minutes ticked by. Minutes turned to hours and hours turned to days. It had been three days since she had been brought back to her room. She only really knew because of the tiny window that was up high on one wall. She had started out searching the room and then searching it again and then again until she could have described the room in detail from memory. After that she pushed the small table over to the wall with the window. If she stood on her tiptoes on top of it she could just barely see out the barred window. Of course the room was up high and because of her limited view all she could really see was the sky and the tops of some barren trees but at least she saw birds fly by a couple times. It was strange, there were always birds flying around and chirping back home, flying from one lush, green tree to another.
In between looking out the window she slept because she had nothing else to do. The more depressed and bored she got the more she just wanted to sleep constantly. She had begun to wonder if Tyrn had decided to leave her here to go insane.
