I just got the email confirmation! My cocoa tree was shipped today! It will be here in two to four business days.

I'm so excited!!! :nana:

I'll someday be able to make my own chocolate!

*yawn*

It's ok - I can go down to the store and buy chocolate, and nto have to worry about remembering to water it. :p

Well, I'm excited about it. I've wanted one for years.

I also have two Lychee seedlings growing and I will have to buy new pots for them. I'm gonna end up with a home jungle if I'm not careful. :cathappy:

I'll be more excited when it's got chocolate on it. Now that's exciting.

To tell the truth, I have a brown thumb, I never remember to water things. I can kill cacti. And if I don't - my son does. Nothing survives being knocked over daily for a month - NOTHING. *sigh*

when i was a kid we lived in New Guinea - we were surrounded by cocoa plantations - we used to sneak in and eat the raw beans - can't remember what they tasted like, sweet i think

I hear they are really good for you raw! I also hear they are more bitter than anything but once you get used to it you will love it.

It's all that chocolate that you've been eating. No wonder your whites develop spots as soon as you put them on. :p

And

Hello Betticus! Pleased to meet you. I think that's wonderful. I would love to have a bevy of exotic plants, but I have no where to put them; and I'm not capable of providing the proper climate for many of the tropical variety. :)

That is very cool! I never knew someone who grew their own cocoa tree. Keep us posted on the progress, and if you make dark chocolate I will happily volunteer as taste tester. ;)

Chocolate comes from a tree?? Who knew. So, how does it get from tree to chocolate bar ? Is it easy ? Would a cocoa tree grow anywhere (as an inside plant)

Congrats on the cocoa tree Betticus, and 2 lychee trees YUM!!! You will need to post pictures for all of us to drool over.

check out wikepedia as to how its made - pretty involved process

i did a chocolate course as part of an advanced pastry chefs course a few years ago - i couldnt stand the sight of it by the end!

one night i accidently tipped about 4 litres of warm melted chocolate down the front of my uniform - it went down the neck of my chefs jacket, into my bra, trickled down my front and into my undies! - then i had a 90min drive home!

sigh.........pity there was nobody to lick it off at the other end

Thank goodness there is another! I thought I was the only one. :)

I have lost 2 trees and 3 shrubs in this heat. You'd think when the thermometer reads over 100 for days at a time, I'd think to water them, but NOOOO!!

That's awesome Betticus! Can i put an order in now for a few pounds of good quality dark chocolate? :D

Damn Betticus.. so we gonna start up a chocolate franchise or what?

You have west of the Mississippi and I'll take the eastern half of the US.

Thanks everyone :) I'm all happy, I'm a plant nut so this kind of thing makes me all giddy.

Right now I have three goji berry plants, three aloe vera plants, two lychee seedlings and those are just indoor plants. Waiting on me to finish the soil prep and transplant them I have two Green Chile pepper plants and two different types of watermelon. I know the season is getting towards the end but it's been so hot!!!

And for growing cocoa indoors in colder climes, I read that growing indoors is tricky for that plant but you could read up on it. I bet you could, there's a university up in Canada that has Date Palm trees producing fruit in a greenhouse up that way. Still on my list for the future is my own olive tree! :) I want to make my own olive oil someday.

As far as chocolate it will be a few years before it will even be old enough to make fruit so don't hold your breath ladies.

goji berries huh. I just bought a bottle of goji berry juice.

can you post me a cocoa pod when you get one spare?? I love the white gooey stuff thats round the outside of the cocoa bean :)

IT'S HERE!!!!!!!! :nana: :catroar: :D :cathappy:

It's so adorable too! It only has the two lowest leaves yellowed from the shipping but overall it looks okay. A little shipping stress and a tiny bit of wilt from the heat here but I do believe that once it's potted and allowed to recover that it will be just fine!

Cocoa grows in the shade of other trees naturally so I'm thinking of eventually moving my big oak file cabinet in my den and making it a permanent home for this tree under the skylight. Alternately I can get a grow light and timer. To think, I could have my own lil tropical reading room in there. :) :D

Hey you! What's up? Build me a race car!

Okay, I managed to get him into a nice sized pot that should be big enough for a few months at least. Then watered and misted it. I caught the cat eyeballing the new lil baby tree but she's been pretty disinterested since. I did take some pics but haven't downloaded them from the camera yet. In the meantime here's a pic of me and my lil broke dune buggy in the garage from the other day.
