Olympic Thoughts
I spent most of my evenings for the past 15 days watching the 28th Olympiad in Athens Greece; these are some of my thoughts about the spectacle.
I have to start by telling you that I am a great fan of the Olympics, the drama of human competition is a drug that compels me to watch as a moth is drawn to a flame. I watched in awe as the best in the world at what they do performed under unbelievable pressure. Some triumphed and some failed, but all are winners in my book.
They showed that the human spirit is what separates us from all other creatures on this earth. We strive for excellence, and sometimes we just try to survive. My mind turned to thoughts of everyday people, with lots of children and a low paying job. People, who are in wheelchairs, people who may belong to a tribe and strive to feed themselves and those members of that tribe.
Soldiers fight and risk their lives, it doesn’t matter if you agree with their cause or not. Their sacrifice to their cause is no less noble. I’m proud to be part of the human race, regardless of its faults. The Olympics shows each and every one of us, that we can do more, and achieve more than we thought possible.
I may live a mediocre life, out of the limelight and the glory of sports gold. But the Olympics have renewed my spirit and drive, to over come what seems like insurmountable problems to me at times, as I’m sure you have felt at some point in your own life.
We may not get gold medals for our efforts, but we find rewards in seeing our children grow up, making a good living, or the most noble of things. Giving a helping hand to those who need it. Being part of humanity is not easy, or rewarding in many instances, but we can always strive to improve our selves and help others when possible.
I believe that is what life is all about, and watching the athletes who have made such sacrifices to be the best in the world, makes me think that I myself can try a little harder to make my own little piece of this world a better place for my family and hopefully those who touch my life in little ways and go unnoticed or un appreciated.
I’m going to try and give more, and take less.
