Speaking as an older guy, 66, who is mostly interested in women my age or older, I do notice a few women in their 40s who give me the eye in the gym or just out and about. That is about as young as I would go. I’m not comfortable thinking sexual thoughts about women who are my grown children’s age.

Older women just have a confidence and no-nonsense attitude toward attraction and sex. That’s for me.

That said, I hope Uncle Harry turns out to be a little more ordinary than my imagination immediately made him.

One thing I’ve learned is that our attractions often have surprisingly deep roots, but they’re rarely as simple as one formative experience. Sometimes it’s a person who made us feel safe, listened to us, treated us with kindness or respect, or simply represented qualities we later found attractive in other people. Sometimes it’s something entirely different.

As for older men, I don’t think that’s especially unusual. Confidence, life experience, emotional steadiness, and the ability to carry on an interesting conversation can be very attractive qualities. Age itself may not be the real draw so much as what often comes with it.

One thing that has surprised me since joining Lit is how many thoughtful conversations I’ve ended up having with older men. I wasn’t looking specifically for that, but many of them have been intelligent, funny, emotionally open, and genuinely respectful of my boundaries. I find myself looking forward to those conversations.

What surprised me even more wasn’t that older men were interested in talking with me. It was how many seemed to assume I wouldn’t be interested in talking with them because I’m younger. They couldn’t have been more wrong. If someone is kind, curious, and enjoys a good conversation, their birth certificate is pretty far down my list of things that matter.


So…I’ll be interested to hear where this story goes. Just don’t leave us hanging too long wondering about Uncle Harry.
