Darren Jacobs sat in his chair, in his living room, waiting. It was Saturday morning and his daughter in law would be arriving soon with suitcases for her and her husbands stay at his house. His wife was already upstairs turning down the guest bedroom as Darren watched from the window. He was 58, kept in good shape thanks to jogging and the occasional game of tennis with his old cronies at the firm. His black hair was greying along the sides now and he kept it close cropped refusing to dye it. He had decided he would fight old age his own way and if that meant his hair going white then he would let it happen. He pulled his glasses off and rubbed his eyes. He was feeling tired, more and more lately. He had been worried it was an illness but a check up at the doctors had settled that, there was nothing wrong with him. No, this tiredness came with life, with getting old, with retiring. He wondered if he should have stayed in work, but when he had the chance of an early retirement he had leapt at it. Thinking he would spend more time with Ellie his wife and grow old gracefully. Instead he was bored.
He put his glasses back on and reached for his coffee sitting on the table next to his chair. At least he wasn't poor he considered as he smiled to himself. No, he had done ok for himself. He had a nice house, not to big, but big enough to make a statement. It had a nice swimming pool, a three car garage and gardens big enough he could maintain them if he wanted, although lately he had contemplated hiring a gardener. His car was an Aston Martin Vanquish, a super car he had always wanted, not that he got to drive it much these days. In fact he should be happy. Should be, but wasn't. Ellie and he had always got on so well because they spent so little time together. Both worked so only weekends brought them together for any real length of time and even then he would be gardening or at the tennis club and she would be reading, writing, or meeting her friends. But now he was home all the time he felt he was under her feet and she didn't exactly hide her frustration. Their sex life, never amazing, was now non-existent and had been for months which only helped make the friction between them greater. He heard the sound of a car pulling into the driveway and stood, seeing it was his daughter in law ... well, at least his son had done something right, he had married the perfect woman. He walked to the front door and opened it wide.
