I'm going, and I don't know how long for. Today BT cut the phoneline. I have nooo clue how DSL is still working, but it won't be long before that goes.

This all started because my sister is too dumb to avoid sites with pop-up downloaders. I installed anti-spyware stuff on there for her and she took it off... *slaps her around* Basically a long-running problem has turned into a £500 bill which, on a £700 a month salary, can't be paid.

So, yeah. Going.

Edit: MONTH! Not week. Yeesh

Just a thought. You might try explaining the problem to BT. Typically they have a department that will SOMETIMES look into such a problem and have a heart. Good luck!

Tried it. Their solution is PART of the problem

OMG!

Ya told me the fact, but not the detail. I repeat, OMG!

Remember ya got my number!

Helen, that sounds like they've cut of your phone number, not necessarily your broadband.

Why did you have a dial up modem installed along with a broadband modem? Take out the dial up modem and hey presto no more outdialling nuisance.

OWITCH!

Too bad JL. Hang in there and see if someone here knows a way around the problem.

At LEAST don't give up until after they stop sending you form letters.

I don't, my sister does. We have two PCs because one PC? Between three Internet addicts? Doesn't work.

Okay. My sister is eighteen and lives in the apartment with me and James. She has her own room and study, and her own PC. She is on Dial Up because I point blank REFUSED to cough up for her to have broadband. My dad is bitching about having to pay for her dial up as it is.

The Broadband is also with BT.

My sister doesn't work. She has no income. My dad pays for her because she's "at college" for another year. He won't help with the payments.

Another reason why most of my UK friends refer to it as BshiT

R.Richard - BT's approach is that it's your problem. Your phone number made those calls - it's not their problem if you weren't the one who made them. The government is dithering on a bill so dialers are completely legal atm and can go up to 100Euros/minute (That's £66 in a real currency).

Hurry back JL,

The Earl

OK helen. Rip out her dial up modem and get a computer savvy friend to make a network in your home. Then everyone gets broadband and no phone bill.

Gauche, I will!

Right now I'm just... yeah. This isn;t helping my depression much.

The answer is to network all/both the PCs so they use the same connection. The necessary hardware (network cards, network switch, cables) cost peanuts compared with that bill - sumthing like fifty quid - less if someone makes the cables, rather than paying PC World (or similar) prices.

Have you a 'guru' who can do this for you?

Used to be able to do that sort of thing myself, but Doze moved on and I went to Linux - and I've got a Linux guru, so one-off jobs like this simply happen, I don't need to sweat.

Mind you, it looks as if your problem has solved itself - at least pro tempore - your broadband is still up, while her dial-up has gone down...

I hope it 'comes out right in the wash'

:( That really sucks, JL but I don't know what you mean by a "pop-up downloader". I know what a popup is and I know what downloading is but I don't see any connection between them.

In other words a dialler.

A pop-up on a site that says download this free piece of software to gain access. and then in very tiny writing calls charged at $4 dollars p/m..

Hopefully, you never will.

The mal-ware in question downloads and installs itself on your pc (via the pop-up), then dials a premium rate number, knocking up huge bills for you - and profits for the git who set it up.

As my darling JL found out...

Quasi-legal theft!

*hugs to you JL*

im sorry to see you go but happy to know its only a short span of time...relatively so anyway.

youre too young to remember, but once upon a time...a long time ago, there was this company called aol. It was a company that took great delight in charging internet users for every moment they were online. YIKES cried the 'fair maiden' when her first bill for $1000.00 came in. "Damn you!" yelled the nefarious ex-husband as he unceremoniously banned internet usage. Then came independant ISP's and the fair maiden was happy once more...even on her 1400dialup modem...

the moral:
time is 'spensive
and this is almost completely unrelated to your angst, so feel free to ignore

I am soooo not too young to remember.

"HELEN **** ***** WHAT IS THIS PHONE BILL ABOUT?"

"Uh, the internet dad?"

"I THOUGHT I TOLD YOU ONLY HALF AN HOUR A NIGHT!"

"But daaaaaaaaaaaad...."

He made me get a job to pay it, and I did. So whyyy isn't he doing this with my sister?

Oh, yeah. HE DOESN'T HAVE TO PAY THIS TIME

But then again, I'm a mean bastard that way. :)

She's a college student.

She doesn't HAVE any money, or I'd have taken every DAMN penny. The stress is killing me here...

Oh dear, bloody kids.

Seems like you're Ok for now love, all inclusive BB is still up and running, and sis can't hook up with the dialler any more. Guess the local Net is the only option when you're sorted.

Best of luck love, and try not to get too stressed out.
