I just read in the local paper, (the Palm Beach Post,) how some local teens decided to terrorise a young girl because she wore a head scarf. This girl, all of twelve years old was wearing a head scarf because of her religeon. (She is a Palestinian Moslem.) These punks decided it was their duty to tear this scarf off her head, hit and kick her, and tell her she should be dead because she is a Moslem. As far as I'm concerned these punks need to be publicly beaten, as well as their parents who they have learned this behavior from. After that they should be persoanly terrorised just so they know how it feels.
We here in America talk about how illing we are to recognise peoples rights and religeons, but this shows how far we have to go. Personaly their actions disgust me.

In contrast, it seems to me, pride in achievement rarely generates violence, because, I think, there's then something real to be proud of.

But humans seem to have a fundamental need for pride.

If society doesn't offer the opportunity to achieve, or even worse, doesn't recognise achievement, those who don't have the talent and strength to achieve despite the odds will resort to pride in clique, creed, colour, or country.

And go to war (on whatever scale) to butress that pride...
