My ever-so-loved Gateway (mutha-fuckin-piece of shit selling, worthless rip-off of a company.... ) has taken it upon itself to further complicate my work/play on and offline.

I have a game called Unreal (the original Tournament version) and when I play this game, which is a first person shooter, the PC seems to decide that I'll either a) change weapons and turn in circles at random, an occurrence that takes a few seconds and is accompanied by a few second-long freezes, or b) begin walking forward for no apparent reason, often firing non-stop, or c) just firing non-stop. These functions are a mixture of keyboard commands (forward or reverse movement) and mouse commands (firing/changing weapons, turning).

Anyone have a clue for why this might suddenly have become an issue? My first thought is that it is a problem within the game, but something had to have triggered said problem, since I've had the game for nearly as long as the PC and it's only begun doing this recently.

Any help would be appreciated.

Laptop or desktop? Sounds like a keyboard problem (first guess), especially with a laptop. If it's a desktop, try a new keyboard (you can get cheap ones that work just fine for under $20) If it's a laptop, you might have to do what I have to do occasionally -- pop the keys out and take alcohol q-tips and compressed air (and sometimes tweezers) to get the gunk out. Mine gets full of cat hair...can't imagine why, as my six cats hardly EVER use it.

Do it advisedly tho, because you can screw it up and end up cursing yourself loudly later. I treat it like surgery.

because it's a 'mutha-fuckin-piece of shit selling, worthless rip-off of a company' gateway? sorry, couldn't resist. i have one of those shit piles somewhere so i can empathize.

check your keyboard. you may have crap stuck in there or it just needs to be replaced, which also means if it's an old gateway you'll need to replace the mouse too.

Thanx guys. While you've given good advice, the fact that it doesn't occur outside of the game tells me there's something internally wring with it, something that's affecting the game itself. i doubt it's an issue within the game, but I might just uninstall and reinstall to see if it works better. What concerns me is more is the idea that something is causing it that will affect others programs soon enough.

Oh well, not a biggie. I'll be getting a new PC soon enough, anyway. Was just hoping to give this one to my Dad when I did.

You might be using unique key combinations that cause the problem. I've had that happen in a single program and it cleared when I cleaned the keyboard, which is why I suggested it.

Otherwise, it would indicate some kind of corruption in your game files and the reinstall might help. After that, you are in deeper water than I swim in.

That latter part is my concern. And I only dog-paddle, when I can stay afloat doing that.

Thanx, mal.

Try playing a game or two of minesweeper -- I think you'll find that your mouse cursor is erratic and that becomes VERY noticeable playing minesweeper.

Probable solution: A new mouse.

It was the mouse. Somehow, the new mouse doesn't work, but the old one that's pretty much taped together and possibly more than five years old, works perfectly well.

As for Directx, my download accelerator doesn't work, so I couldn't even try that.

Can't wait for the new PC.

Thanx, everyone, BTW. Don't want anyone to think I'm not appreciative. I am, very much so. Especially considering how much I like that game.

I had the same problem with Tomb Raider. Lara would walk in circles, unprompted.
Happened on both computers, so I reckoned it wasn't the keyboard or mouse.
Seemed to be okay when I uninstalled/installed.
Must be a game problem. :)
