What is it with editing posts?

It seems evil to me. If you do it, why?

What I mean is:

If you don't take the time to get it right before you post, isn't it cheating to go back and pretend for posterity that you did get it right?

If you say something you shouldn't, shouldn't you learn to not say it to begin with rather than go back and redact?

I mean, once you press post, some people may see it and whatever reaction happens. Changing it from that point forward for all subsequent viewers can lead to a weird imballance of perceptions in the forum. OK, weirder imballance.

Not that there's anything wrong with weird, and not that it would be distinguishable by not editing, but... what was the question again?

I think you have an excellent point.

I will edit if I notice a word spelled incorrectly - that truly bothers me.

(If I stuff my foot in my big mouth from time to time, so be it.)

seriously, i have hyper brain syndrom...so sometimes i hafta get in there and add sumphin like two min. later. or the next day...month... whatevah... nuffin evil about it, kinda.

ill edit in a few and let you know.

I usually edit because of a missed typo. The difference between the reply screen and the completed post is enough to show typos I missed the first time.

Occasionally I edit to add information. I did that on the Spanish Inquisition thread. I found a link after I'd posted. I had also made an error on my first post because I replied from memory without rechecking.

Editing is a useful tool. I would like to be able to delete some posts and/or threads I'd started once they are past their sell-by date. I don't want to be reminded in three years time that I said something that I have just contradicted. I'm human. So are most of us who haven't got four legs or webbed feet.

Humanum est errare

Some of us type about ten seconds before we think, so the first draft is 75% incoherent gibberish. The tidying up is for the benefit of the readers' sanity.

I said some of us. Not me. I'm flawless.

I edit because I tend to write quickly and ramble too much, getting my point lost and needign revision in order to get things on track. I also tend to misword things, leading to the possibility (and too often the reality) of misconceptions being made.

Honestly, it's a bit unfair, but on the BB, we can go back and remove the things we say we don't really mean, like we wish we could in life. Since it's not the real world, I don't feel it's so sinful, to be honest.

I'm with Sarahh - I only edit if I didn't catch a typo but if I put my foot in mouth I just deal. If you're not willing to put it out there, you probably shouldn't post it on a public web site. It's weird to me to go back and see people who have erased their posts entirely and it's just blank.

I may have gotten it right, but I have stupid fingers that don't always type what they're told to. LIke Ogg, I sometimes don't see the errors until the change in format makes it obvious.

Editing information into a post when new information becomes available is a useful tool to keep the information together.

So I edit for typos and to add information that should be with the original post instead of fifty or five hundred posts separated from the original post -- mostly for the benefit of NEW readers to a thread.

I seldom if ever delete information from a post in an edit because doing so often makes the following posts incomprehensible -- I edit to improve communication, not frustrate it.
