... what do you do to get in the mood?
... do you not get in the mood at all?
... play music, light some candles, drink some wine?
... or do you simply write it cold and know that it is good?
... how do you write a real believable sex scene?

I'm always in the mood when I'm passionate about what I want to write. :D

Sometimes I use music, and sometimes not. It depends on my mood, I guess. Music can be distracting at times. I've never used candles, but there's a first time for everything. I just bought a huge pack of tealight candles for an upcoming project. 100 of those little suckers in a bag. I'm not much of a drinker, so I don't use wine.

There have been a couple of times when I started off cold but that quickly changed once I got into the scene. I know it's good because it's a result of my creative horniness.

About the believable part, I don't know. I just do the best I can.

It depends. Usually, I have an idea, and I just write it down, like a snippet of a scene, and it develops on its own.
Occasionally, I get myself in the mood to write something sexy by watching porn first. I see this scene with a cute guy moaning his heart out, and I just HAVE to write a scene about it.

1) I get into my mood, which is pointed and plotted in a way
2) not sexually :| does a horror writer get in a mood to murder and go do it to get the feel of it?
3) I do have music that gets me into character
4) My sex is hot
5) you write what you know and use it even in fantasy. :D

I usually opt for soft-core porn because it leaves more to my imagination. I get to fill in the blanks. ;)

porn is good :) But I usually opt for photos, not videos... the curve of a thigh or the two bodies twined together can often turn my imagination in that direction enough...as for music, a fun one to write to is Bolero... the way it builds...

Oh, ho! Yes. And how. I wrote my very first piece to Bolero. ;)

1) Good question. I still don't know. Since I don't separate writing the rest of the story from the sex I have to be in the mood for writing to write the sex scene. And my writing mood comes and goes.

2) See 1.

3) See 1.

4) I guess you could say I write it cold. I'm now pretty confident that I can do good sex scenes after hearing from literally hundreds of readers that I do good work.

5) Hmm. I'd say that you concentrate on emotions, things that trigger emotions, how those emotions are displayed and what those emotions are.

Describe how the people are dressed, or how their bodies move, the facial expressions they show and involuntary physical reactions like sweating or their skin colouring. Lots of metaphors involving heat and light seem to work as well. ;)

And watch the continuity. The people can't be doing it missionary in one paragraph and have one of them chained to the ceiling in the next.

Also advancing the action. Usually start slow, get the characters more involved working harder as they do so.

One more thing, foreplay. Just as useful in a story as in real life. Play for a while, tease your characters and your readers. Draw them in, make them want.

Interesting questions, Lizzie.

Mood: I write the story up to the sex... if I don't feel frisky by the time I get to the sex, I've clearly done something wrong.

Environment: The more sock'em-fuck'em the scene the less distractions I prefer.

Good: I'm a guy, even bad sex is pretty fuckin' good. If I had to write it cold, because of a lack of writing time... I catch it on the edit.

Believable: I don't want to write a believable sex scene... I want to write a scene you want to be a part of, giving as good as you're getting.

Sincerely,
ElSol

First I need to be in the mood for writing.

The sex scene has to be required by the story line.

So - I write it. Just like any other part of the story.

My mood is irrelevant to the story. What is relevant is the drive to write.

I sit down in front of my keyboard and start typing. Mood has nothing to do with it.
