I have done everything and it is time .......I can't put it off anymore and when I bought it, it came with widows ME on it and I striped it off and put 98 2nd editon on . I have 2 desltops and a laptop all on network and ME wouldn't play well with others but now I will use this as stand alone for work stuff.

Any clue?

Do I just start pulling things off?

Any tips on reloading?

Advise much appricated. :(

So lemme get this straight, your puter came with ME............you formatted the Hard Drive and installed 98 2nd Edition......or did you just install 98-2nd Ed over ME?

If your gonna Format the HDD, then backup everything you can elsewhere and start fresh.

Did I interpret correctly?

Nope Removed it all....at the time it would not hook up and not stop causing me problems with our network.

The computer was never the same and the dude that did that never put drivers back in for my buner so I have to burn from the "other desktop.

If I put it back the way it was I hope some other problems might stop.

The "other" puters all have windows 98 se. on them and it seemed to work........

I don't know about this sfuff and have to depend on the local puter shop for help and they can't keep folks, I never get the same dude.

They all SAY there experts.......................

I just wanted to say a hearty hello to Wiz!

Helloooooooooooo

So you Formatted the Hard Drive and are going to start from scratch? Is that right? Maybe I am missing something here.......

Yes Sir.............Brand new..............From scratch........Backed up everything on cd's twice.....I have what I need to save....

I hate to do it but need to for many problems.

Hi there MissTaken, you sexy lady..................

Do you have Norton Ghost (or a similar program)?

Put things back on, one by one..........gradually seeing if a problem arises with a particular program (I am assuming you had some sort of glitch somewhere).........

Answer the first question and maybe I can help you, what is it exactly your looking for? Tips on Programs or ways to install things? Things to install or not install?

Ok ....Let me see here I currently have Norton antivirus,Noton personal firewall, and norton privacy control. All updated daily...scans several times a day....
Thought I was protected, belive I still am . I have caught bugs in the past allways caught them and got rid of them correctly....

A few things sound like a "worm" tpye from what I know of them.....
See what this sounds like, months ago my aim started get "suck"...like a mini lock up then after a few sec. I could go again....I uninstalled they reinstalled, No change.

Next major thing here was really messing up explorer.. Open then lock up right away but yet I can use netscape fine (which I don't care for) like explorer better.

Scan disk took alomost 26 hours over the weekend then it would not defrag at all.

I hang on a signmakers web site and there are lots of bugs out there. I do download files ( vector clipart) from other signmakers every once in a while someone gets a bug and passes it around without knowing?

If I put ME back on I can again use my cd burner that is collecting dust.

Whew......Did I help or make a bogger mess of things explaining?

Chuckus can you install a new windows program over another? would that be better?

If you can I never knew you could.

I don't think you can "install" 98 2nd Ed. over ME but you can install ME over 98. I don't recommend doing that either way........starting from scratch is much better and cleaner.

i.e. When you just "upgrade" to a new OS (Win 98 from Win 95, etc....) files are left in place that could corrupt files that are needed to run the current version therefore causing problems. Sometimes people have "older" versions of a similar or the same file which cause Havoc in the OS.

I have never and will never "upgrade" to an OS. I always format my HDD and start from scratch.

I ask if you had Norton Ghost or similar program for two reasons.

1. When I install the OS clean on the freshly formatted HDD, I always make a "ghost" copy of the clean OS. That way if I have a problem, I can always just install the "ghost" clean copy of the OS w/out all the junk.

2. I also make a "ghost" copy of my HDD and OS after installing some basics, i.e. Word, Excel, et al. Again, if I have a problem I can always revert to the "clean" version which was put on PRIOR to any problems or other such things.

From the sounds of it, your HDD might be waining (i.e. on the way out) or some other problems are there. My HDD has never taken more than 2-3 hours MAX to Defrag using Norton Speed Disk.

It sure sounds like you have some "bugs" that you have gotten from downloading cliparts from others. Caution is a good thing. If you get some clipart, try and get it from a reliable source (someone you've gotten files from before and noticed no problems with) instead of from any-old-person-who-has-it deal.

I am very very careful what I download and the source it comes from. If I am one bit unsure, I don't do it. Period.

Norton is good and better if you regularly update it. Also check their site for the latest things going around. You might find it useful........they also have some tips that migh benefit you.

Did I help at all?

If you really formatted the HD

Then stick in the windows CD and hope like hell you're set to boot from that drive... it will want to do an install, but for all intents and purposes formatting the HD removes what was there... you're on your way.

wizzard, you should not be having that much trouble after doing a clean disk reboot. Did you unload programs like GO Back or other retrieval programs ( doesn't Norton have one?) before you started. If you have them and you do not unload them first they will "ghost" your computer if not worse.

If you go to the microsoft site i think you can get there from the update page, you can find out how to do it right. have plenty of print parer on hand. Somthing like microft windows 98 support i think.

luck, fgarvb1.

Honestly Wizzie, it sounds like you have/had problems with corrupted files causing problems. Did you get the "blue screen of death" much? (By that I mean, fatal exception errors alot?)

How old a machine is this your talking about? Pentium 3 class or what?

installing winME over Win98 its not supported.. it may finish but there will be many problems

and just for your FYI Wizzie.

I run Windows 2000 Professional. Love it, mean it.

I am an anti Windows XP person, maybe because it is too new and I have heard some horror stories. I don't like ME, because it is part Win 98 and Part NT and it has the bad habits of both.

I have a P3 850Mhz with a Gig of 133 Mhz RAM running on an Asus Motherboard that flies.............

I am just waiting for $$$ to come down on p4's and the motherboards before upgrading..........plus I build my own machines.

been running WinXP for two years , total of 1 crash due to my sony digital cams experimental drivers which are no longer needed.
Win2000 is great but XP far exceeds it

Oh boy.........
Chuckus I never thought about making a copy but bet your rear I will from now on and yes I undersatnd what you me so far.
No blue screen very offten at all but it shuts my window for explorer right down. Whole system has been real slow when I open a small file it takes way longer than it normally would.

LukkyKnight If that was all I had to do I know how to reload and set evrthing the way I like it.

fgarvb1 From what I am getting I hate to say it but but I bet I have ghosts all over it then.

Asendin I would like to do what is right ....I don't need another band aid........I need to fix the damn thing.

Puter was bought last Jan. Hp pentium 3 650 mg. I belive if I am saying it right 40 gig harddrive.

When I started having problems I moved most all important info to the "other destop which is only 10 gig harddrive and it is running just fine.

So were you running the Beta's of XP? I would presume this the case...........

I ran the Beta for 95 and 98 for quite some time and actually helped MS out by reporting to them issues I had, etc.....

and for FYI, my Win2000 hasn't crashed since I installed it over a year and a half ago.

There are Pro's and Con's to each...........I just am not to fond of XP............yet.

It sounds as if you have a capable system there Wizzie. Sounds like corrupted files and maybe you got some files creating havoc.

Try the clean install............from square one. See what happens. If you don't have Norton Ghost (or similar program) check into it, they can really help out a bunch. Just be careful with it until you figure it out.

and yes Ascendin is right, fix it right don't put a band-aid on it to "hold it over". I do it once and be done with it.

As far as my personal choice Win98 or ME, 98 every time.

Asendin

Thats what I am trying to find out ....what do I do? where do I start?......Do I just start wacking programs?....

Where does one start?????

Wizard,

Precursor-Format your HDD

1.Install OS of your choice.

2.Then, install "Office Suite" (i.e. Excel, Word, etc...)

somewhere in between step 1 and 2, make a "ghost" copy of your drive. After Step 2, make another "ghost" copy.

Then just little by little add back in programs. Step by Step.

yes early betas were very very stable, much more than any betas threw the Win95-Win2000 testing..

not including WindowME, that OS belongs in the recycle bin

Well the first coupla beta versions of 95 were okay, for the time but as they went on they crashed more and more...........the closer they got to 95 the better they were, the beta for 98 was MUCH improved over 95 beta's.

The only beta I played with for WIN2000 was very very good.

and Yes I agree, WinME belongs in the trash can.

i'm not exactly sure about everything that was said on this thread.. but to start from scratch and delete everything.. i suggest an Fdisk.. erases everything that way, and you can partition and format if you so choose.

this helpful place might help some if you dont know how to fdisk or need some form of support in doing so
