Today I was once again introduced to just how idiotic people can be.
I was called by one of my R.N.'s to try and speak with one of her patients. She couldn't make sense of what she was saying. She knew the lady wasn't speaking Spanish of French, and our Russian Housekeeper couldn't understand her either. The Housekeeper had the idea of calling for me, she figured that if I didn't understand the ptient I would at least be able to give them a good idea of what language she was speaking.
To my surprise I understood her. She was speaking an older dialect of German. I was able with my little German and the use of a Translator book to make myself understood. Oh she was happy, as was the R.N.
Well the patient and I talked for a while, me with much consultation of my dictionary. (I have forgotten way too much and hope to one day find another who speaks German who lives near me so I can get back in practice.
This afternoon when her son showed up I was again called to her room. Now the three of us ended up speaking German for quite a while. During this time the Dietary People came in with the patients lunch. It seems they became unhappy when they heard us speaking German and complained to my supervisor.
I found out the reasoning behind their complaint when I was called into my bosses office. They were upset because we weren't speaking English.
I tried my best not to laugh but couldn't help myself. My boss became unhappy with this and informed me that it was Hospital Policy that all staff were to speak English. The flags went up and I charged straight ahead. I immediatly put in a complaint against half the dietary staff as well as several of the Nursing Staff. (Aides and R.N.'s alike.) for speaking languages other than English. My boss went nuts. She accused me of being unfair, unkind and disrespectful. I stuck to my guns and told her that what was good for me was also good for everyone else.
My boss became so upset she kicked it up the ladder. The C.N.O. came down and wanted to chew on me for being disrespectful. I in turn told her that respect went both ways. I asked her why I was being singled out and why my speaking a foreign language with a patient was so bad when the others were merely speaking their home language with their countrymen. She conceded the point.
