Remember good old chat rooms? This thread reminds me of one.
People chatting, shooting the breeze, being funny, people LOLing etc.

How long have I lived in China?
First time was 2002-early 2004.
Second time was 2006 to now.

I used to mod on a site that had chat rooms. I was a mod for the chat rooms as well. It was fun. I didn't sleep much those days.

So you have lived there that long...and cannot read Chinese? Rosetta stone perhaps?

OK not the Rosetta stone I was thinking of...you mean the language learning program? I used Mango for a while.
And my students teach me oral Chinese. (get your mind out of the gutter).

Do you prefer China to the US? Wait, that is assuming you were originally from here lol.

In China, it's fairly easy to find a teacher, better than using Rosetta stone.

I am an Aussie. And yes I prefer China to the US and Australia. I plan to retire here.

Especially in regards to writing. Since the characters only sometimes have a strong link with the pronunciation and/or meaning, and writing the strokes in the wrong order can make it really hard to read, it's a lot better to learn that from someone.

I'm happy enough to concentrate on improving my spoken Chinese. I believe I am quite adept at handling most situations. Sometimes I need someone Chinese to accompany me, like the doctor or the dentist.

Yeah, I'm trying to get to the point of finishing reading my first novel in Chinese. It's killing me, and I'm not that far into it, but it's good. I had already read it in English, so it's familiar material, but I must admit, it's better in Chinese so far.

I wish to become fluent. I studied it some at college, I know a few companies here and back home that, probably within a year or ideally two(ideally, because I like living here full time right now) I can get work living both here and back in the states, which is my end goal. I enjoy China, most of my friends here are Chinese, and aside from teaching, I often spend long periods of time not using English, especially holidays, holidays are entirely in Chinese for me.

That said, even though my Chinese is decent, the dentist and doctor, I also bring someone. I've improved, but when you study a language, you are rarely taught enough medical jargon to safely count on your own translation skills.

True. I tend to avoid spending time with foreigners. Chinese are often much more interesting. And I get to practice my Chinese with them.
Actually, I like being able to think in English when I am surrounded by Chinese people talking, because I usually don't understand them; it's like white noise.
If my Chinese got to the point where what they say would distract me, that is I would understand what they were saying I'd probably consider moving to another country (not really, I do prefer China).

Jiang Rong's 'Wolf Totem' which is a movie too. As good as the book - all that wonderful Inner Mongolian scenery.

Written by Lu Xun, who is considered one of the greatest modern(1930s) Chinese writers. I actually hate his themes, but his writing is fantastic.

I'll have to check that movie out!
