First it wouldn't open and now when I put a CD in it just makes this horrible grinding noise! It's a Gateway and I haven't even had it a year and a half yet.

Helllpppp meeeee! :(

If you bought an extended warranty, check with Gateway.

If it's not still under warranty or a service contract, zip on down to your local Computer store and pick up a new drive.

Replacing a CD drive is a pretty simple process and windows is pretty good bout detecting new hardware and asking for the drivers if it needs them -- a simple CD drive probably won't need drivers.

Even If you upgrade to a DVD-RW drive, like I recently did, it's still mostly a matter of unplugging the bad drive and plugging in the new one then letting windows lead you thorough the driver installation.

Surely you jest...!

Ok, surely you know some geek that can help you out. (Or in this case, just someone who isn't completely helpless. ;) ) Everybody does.

Is it a laptop or a stationary 'puter?

Replacing a CD Drive is on the same order of dificulty as disconnecting everything to pack it up to take to the shop so you can pay someone else to fix it.

Sounds like you need to look in the phonebook for a computer repairman who makes house calls -- and cash in a few stocks or bonds so you can pay him and the mark-up on the new drive for having it delivered and installed.

Take the other CD out. It does that when you have two in the drive. :)

I can fix things that don't have wires. Or... uh.... tires:eek:

It's a desktop computer. I don't even know how to take the cover off the thingy-thingy. But I'm positive it's not a laptop at least!

Hurhuhr. You're funny.

And don't think I didn't check that!

You have a bug.

Possibly a small cockroach in the drive.

The clacking noise you can hear is him tripping over his ice skates as the CD whirls around.

It's a great place for bugs to meet dates on cold winter nights.

What ever you do - don't spray insecticide through the slot.

Yes, that's a technical term.

I may be a geek, but I'm not a nerd.

Or the other way around. Whoever can fix stuff with wires, that's the one I'm not.

You would be a nerd then.

Geeks are good with fixing all things technical- to include those with wires.

At least, I think that's how it works.

But nerds can do math, right? Cause I can't do that either.

Man, I'm a lot more helpless than I thought.

Yes, nerds can do math.

I can do calculus, but not basic math, so I don't have full nerd status.

You're only as helpless as the person tying you up makes you.

If you pour a quart of motor oil in there it will prolly stop the grindin noise.

If you call the company sometimes they will just send you another even if the warranty is gone, they don't want you bad-mouthin their shitty crap.

Its cheaper to buy and plug in another than pay someone to look at a bad cd drive, lots of places will talk you through it on the phone if you don't feel comfortable.

Carson,

Buy a new CD Drive and install the damned thing. It's not hard. (The newer comoputers really are the second plug and play hardware out there. The first I'm sure you can figure out.:D )

BTW, The cover is usually held on by four screws on the back of the machine.

Do yourself a favor. Buy an Anti-Magnetic Wrist strap and use it. (Even though you're not playing with the Memmory chips this is always a good thing to do.)

Cat

P.S. Please make sure you unplug the machine BEFORE you open it. (I don't care to hear about a scorched Sheppard.)
