right... so i was one of the many who had a run-in with that bastard of a worm named Kelvir on sunday night. well... i did something extremely stupid and poked around in RegEdit when i shouldn't have and deleted a few things. i was getting very frustrated by the fact that i couldn't google the word "virus" without my browser shutting down and not being able to get into my task manager. and now i can't move icons around, paste after copying, get my toolbar to work right, or connect to the net. i'm on my old computer now, but i want to at least be able to be able to save my files from my laptop. there are numerous items that either took hours to create/modify/get to work right and many things unique and can't be gotten again.

i deleted the following:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Ole
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Ole
HKEY_USERS\.default\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_USERS\.default\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa
HKEY_USERS\.default\Software\Microsoft\Ole

is there anything that can be done? i'll hand-copy any amount of code i have to to get my files saved. nothing life-threatening or anything, just... personal.

Can you link the computer to another..like in a network and save all your data files that way?

That's what I do. Or...in the case of a desktop model I make the present hard drive a slave, install a new hard drive, install Windows and move all my data files from the slave (former master) to a CD.

You can reinstall Windows, whater version you have, and not lose your files. This should restore all those registry entries you deleted, without reinstalling the virus.

But, as always, save your files before you do anything, just in case.

if i lose everything, can i come to your house and use you as a condom?

...because the way they word everything when i started that last time scares me and makes me fear for my files.

I said to save your files, first. You didn't say anything about what version of Win you have, or the disks you have to reinstall. DO NOT use the manufacturers "System Retore" disk, as those will usually erase everything and restore your computer to what it was from the factory.

Don't blame me. I didn't tell you to use RegEdit to delete everything that makes your computer work!

oh, and.... i can't save my files. that's the fucking problem! if i could, they'd already be safe on a cd and i'd have already reinstalled windows without worrying, and i wouldn't be nearly pissing myself, here.

i know a bit about computers, but i don't know that much. so what you're saying is that my XP disk should reinstall windows and not wipe my harddrive even though a lot of the text for guiding me thru the process is making it sound like it will? don't take offense, just pretend i'm a normal idoit computer user and not the sarcasticly genious Professional Bastard that i am.

Time to back up and reinstall.

Reinstalling does not overwrite files, except for files in the My Documents folder.

Reinstalling does NOT replace files in My Documents. It will probably create a new user name, so the old My Docs is somewhere else in your "Documents and Settings" folder tree.

Even better.

So this is why my son always tells me to make back ups every day. And I thought it was because he liked to torture me. And make me waste money on CDs.

yup. because even someone with an IQ of gigantic proportions can be about as useful as someone with a fraction of that when it comes to certain things...
